Fitted a new 120g Western Digital 8MB ram. It shows up in the bios, is supposedly working fine when I check my "System", but won't show under "My Computer". Obviously I can't format it if I can't find it....What have I forgotten?

(My marbles are around somewhere, I just can't find em)

Have you set your new harddrive to work as "slave"?

Hmm - what happens if you only install the new hdd - are you able to install windows then?

You'll have to low-level format it first, using FDISK or Partition Magic. There should be information on the Western Digital site on how you should do this.

Good luck,
Will

It's amazing, I'm having the exact same problem right now with my old IBM, everything is alright, but the drive is not seen in My Computer...

This is what I'm doing: I've donwloaded a DOS little program from Seagate that allows me to format the disk without being in Windows, so I formated it, and then reinstalled it. I'm waiting till the formating in NTFS is finished, and then I can tell if I succed or not to see it again.

I think this is a good way. I'm pretty sure Wester Digital has some similar programs to download from their web. Try it out... and good luck.

Sorted....many thanks. I tried a search on the topic in the forums but didn't find what I was looking for....I'd better fine tune my search skills.

Did as you suggested Petal....and Will......and Spirit........and Nestor. I'd forgotten some of these basics, so thank you all.

Now, if anyone can tell me where my car keys are I'll be most grateful.......

Where's my car.............?

Which OS are you running? If you're using Win98, you have to split the drive up into several partitions because FAT32 can only handle 32GB per partition. If you're using XP, XP can partition and format the drive with NTFS right off the CD. I don't know about W2k, I don't remember how that worked.

I formatted a 180GB HD from WD and it works fine. I'm using XP SP1....

P.S. No HD will show up in My Computer unless it's been formatted. In W2k/XP, there's a Disk Management Utility in "Computer Management" in Administrative Tools. (Storage --> Disk Management) From there you can partition and format drives. In Win98, you have to run FDISK from DOS, I believe. There might be some way to format the disk from Windows, but I don't have Win98 anymore and I can't tell you.

Thanks folks.....Nestor....where'd you leave my car?..........

I'm running XP and every time I hit a problem I tell myself to go buy "XP for Dummies".....then I lose my car. Thanks for that tip on Administrative Tools, Shayne. I'll look it up in my new book....tomorrow.
