I just had to tell someone....does this sound familiar?
So far the installation of my new system has been a breeze. Just enable SATA in bios. XP Pro did all the other work, formatted to NTFS by default, found the necessary driver...Fingers crossed coz after I get all XP updates I'm ready to tweak XP and install audio software.
Hopefully I'll be sounding like a Mac user...."It just works, no dramas".
Intel 865 Perl and WD Raptor SATA
Oh hell.....Fools rush in.....I've tweaked XP beyond recognition. The sytem now sees W>DWS ?P.....and has hung...and hung....and hung.....I guess everybody now knows I've got a well hung system.
Reinstalled XP as a repair, and it's going again.....Worst thing that could happen I guess is that have I to do a re-install. In hindsight (20/20) I would have just changed the obvious settings like the startup programs and left it alone for a while. Rashness and perfectionism don't sit well together.
Off to my workspace now to plug in my keyboard. No more predictions.

When you first posted, I thought: well, that’s nice cos he could do the SATA thing straight from the beginning, and not like me that stayed there for ages.
Well, I don’t think it’s that bad… I would just start everything again, RIGHT NOW! It’s the good moment, cos if you wait for a long time, you’ll get more problems… You know… after a few months, valuable files start to fold onto our drives, and then it becomes really painful to undo what we have done… I would absolutely insist for a complete formatting with “Zero Filling” and then start again the whole thing.
I’m going extremely slowly, opposite as you, cos I am far from being an expert. I think you rather are, and this is too the problem, cos people trust too much what they know, and so they jump onto crazy things.
I have taken note of absolutely everything I have done to the system, every little step is written down to a piece o numbered steps. I’m just beginning doing the image, which is not evident for me…
Well, put your heart up, and start again, I’m sure you’ll not regret it in let’s say… 6 months time, when you already have one or two albums into your HD.

Hey, thanks for those words of encouragement.
I am learning....slowly. And I'm impressed with the hardware I've bought. I can add to it (yes Garyb a 120Ghard drive is a good idea) once I've got everything sorted.
Nestor, I agree. I will do a complete reinstall. I'm just checking that I can get things working for now. I'll take your advice and do a format and reinstall soon.
I'm still unsure about which sequencer to use. SFP looks both brilliant and huge.
The synths sound better than I expected. But I haven't co-ordinated a sequencer yet. I'd better get something simple at the start or I'll be overwhelmed. My last bit of gear was a 12 inch tape machine. I think I'm almost ready to join an SFP forum as well.......!
Thanks again to all for your input, and for just being there....it really helps.
