I just got all my new toys this weekend and I'm having some trouble. I just bought a shiny new Scope/SP to go with my Pulsar II (the Luna gets the boot, keep an eye on the Pulsar purchasing page) an A16 Ultra, and a Magma CB-2 2 PCI card chassis so my studio can run from my laptop. Because I knew that I'd be moving to the laptop eventually I setup WinXP using the Standard PC kernel option as my ACPI setup on my nForce mobo gave me troubles. However, on the laptop, it seems that the system has run out of resources (IRQ's I think, though it doesn't specify) and I'm pretty sure I need to turn the ACPI management back on.

This is where the problem begins. It was real easy to get the ACPI to go to Standard PC, just go to device manager -> Computer -> and update the driver where I could choose between the two. Now, I follow the same steps and the ACPI option is gone! Is the kernel switching a one way street? How do I find the appropriate driver? I'd really hate to have to reinstall at this point!

Also, I think my laptop's mobo might really blow and be part of this resource management issue. It's an ALi board running an Athlon XP 1500+. The processor is fine and I've got a GB of memory, so the thing smokes, but I think that it's lack of tweaking features might become a problem if it's not already.

I'm not too concerned about being able to run a million masterverbs or anything, I just want the damn system working. But if I have to replace it (I didn't just drop $3500+ to then let my laptop crap everything up), can anyone recommend a good PC laptop for audio?

I know powerbooks are the staple but I'm not going MAC. No particular prejudice, just that I've got about $1500 in software that I'm not too keen on re-buying.

I'm currently looking at the new Intel Centrino's with widescreen monitors by Dell and Compaq. Anyone who knows about em I'd appreciate some input.

Hi Sam,

I don't quite follow what system you're using, you say you have a laptop with Ali chipset, and a mobo with Nforce - where are you connecting the magma exactly? Did you get the PCI card to connect it to a desktop as well as the PCMCIA for a laptop?

Either way, a reinstall is the best way to change the kernel from Standard PC to ACPI.

Regarding the new laptop situation, I can't really say I've had experience of the new Dells, but my Inspiron 8100 (1.2ghz P3) is still running great. I don't really rate Compaq stuff, the only laptops I would consider at this stage are Dell, IBM and Toshiba. The Magma boxes are quite particular about what cardbus controller they use. Check their website for a list of tested chipsets.
