So I was writing a tune this evening (not changing my hard drives !) and I went out to work (driving round london checking street lights are working . . .). I left my machine on, but with internet de-activated.

I came back 3 hours later, project still open, cubase still open, but no sound. Strange, I thought, it was working when I left ! So I closed cubase and tried again. 'contact with the audio card lost' or something. I rebooted my machine, but it still wasn't working. Maybe its too hot, I thought. So I left if off for maybe 45 minutes. Rebooted, still nothing. Then I noticed that for the project I had loaded, no DSP usage at all was showing. Its quite a big project . . . odd, I thought.

So I opened her up and made sure the cards were pushed in good and tight, and blew a bit of the dust away (it was pretty cool by this stage, so I decided it wasn't a heat problem).

Rebooted again, still nothing. One thing that was wierd was that the project was still taking ages to load. But presumably, if the card and the computer weren't talking at all, it just wouldn't even be able to TRY and load.

Then I tried another project, just out of desperation. IT WAS WORKING FINE !

What can be wrong with my project? And oh please don't make me have to start again. It's big. . . its complicated . . . its late I'm tired AND I JUST WANT TO WRITE MUSIC !!!

I guess I've solved the problem, although I still have no idea why it was happening . . .

my samplerate was set to slave spdif in from my minidisc . . . turning it to master seemed to do the trick . . .

oh well, if it works it works I guess.

No offence, mr swim, I didn't mean to laugh with you but that situation... Some time ago there was a super topic full of those common incidents we encounter. Your experience deserves a place in the list, but I couldn't find the topic (go laugh;). I found it a fun piece since it's my kinda humour and it looks very familiar to me! Like inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panter: "They called me the cat on the bridge"
