well, it's time to upgrade my P3 1Ghz, 256MB to something with a little more power.
Since I'm on a budget I'm looking at AMD at the moment. My upgrade would be:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (119 Euro)
ASUS A7N8X (99 Euro)
512 MB DDR SDRAM PC333 (72 Euro)

Would this be a good upgrade in your opinion? Any known problems with these components? Or should I be looking at different models? As you can see, my budget is about 300,- Euros.
Thanks for any advice!

I believe that particular chipset uses dual RAM channels so you are better off with 2 256 Mb chips instead.

Other than that it is hunky dory.

It will perform BETTER with dual-channel RAM but it will still function with one stick.

I'd advise getting a 512 stick then adding another when you can afford it... 2x 256 is very limiting.

After some troubles, my new system is purring like a little kitten. A little kitten running at >2Ghz that is

One question though, is it normal for Athlon XP's to run as hot as 54-56 degrees celcius? Should I add another cooler or should this be no problem?

My athlon XP runs at about 57degrees celcius. ...I am getting BSODs though! I guess they could be heat related.

However, I understood that a CPU heat issue manifests as a frozen screen rather than a BSOD, and a graphics card heat issue manifests as "artifacts" on screen rather than a BSOD.
