I'm aware that the XP servicepacks come strongly recommended for pulsar, but what about the multitudinous other updates that Windows Update recommends?

After a fresh install it suggests about 32 updates to things like IE and OE.

Do I practise "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" or do I keep myself totally up to date?

I usually read a bit on the update, if it's for features or programs I use, then I update. If it's some .NET improvent, I skip it. You can always make a System Restore Point if you want, and let System Restore run till the update's proven to work.

Currently there is something for harddisk, firewire, rpc and usb that is to recommend. If you are online I also recommend the security fixes.
