i read somewhere that it's not safe to do that..?
i don't use neither usb nor serial/parallell ports so has anyone turned those off in bios and got away with it?

sure it's safe!but only do it if you're sure you don't need it........

...and first remove the drivers in Device Manager. Then reboot, edit BIOS, reboot in OS.
Should work great, and saves you some interrupts and possibly an IRQ.
PS. Newer motherboards have usually APIC, an extension of ACPI, which allows for 24+ real IRQ's, not emulated. The emulated IRQ's were the reasons to put the PC in Standard PC mode.
