I got a Pulsar + (with balanced XLR out) And the sound is CRYSTAL CLEAR !On 2002-07-17 02:02, alabama wrote:
Marcuspocus, pardon my ignorance, but how do you connect the PS8's to your Pulsar? You run the analog outs through a preamp to the PS8's, right? Is $650 through zzounds a good price?
I paid my pair at 1200$CAN, so 650$US seam a good price (canadian dollars is still worth more than half of us dollars, not much thou). So you have a better price than i got.

The PS8 like allot of monitors now are active which means that have their own power amplifiers. This does away with the need for separate power amplifiers and also the cable between them. It gives the designers an opportunity also to design the speaker and amplifier so they complement each other. The "active" bit refers to the active crossover. Not sure what the difference is between an active and passive crossover but I think there is an improvement.
Active speakers also tend to be Bi-amped. this means that each cone in each speaker is powered separately.
The result is often a tighter sound more suitable for monitoring.
It also takes up less space
The only problem is some active speakers dont have front panel on/off switch which can mean lots of reaching round the back to turn them off.

I use the Genelec 1029A. The pair about 800$. They are small but very high quality sound. The lower frequencies below 68Hz you can hear but they have not the real volume. But you can upgrade it later with the 1091A subwoofer. Furthermore you are able to upgrade your system with further 1029A for surroundsound.

So you have been happy with them? I've been looking those monitors for a while, 'cause I have pair of 1032A's but they are too big to fit in our control room so I'm keeping them in the other side of the studio. Anyway the sound is great, enough bass even without the 1091AOn 2002-07-23 06:02, FreiFlug wrote:

almost anything on the market is better than headphones.

Seriously, though, I actually don't mind using headphones that much. But then, I don't actually have any monitors and in my current place, really couldn't. Of course, I listen occasionally through my normal Hi Fi, [denon] which has the added bonus of giving me that end-user feel (the end-user usually being me and my Hi Fi

I use the trusty Mackie 824s. Wonderful monitors and highly rated in all the reviews I have read about them. I can't tell you how much they cost in the USA though.

Have some of you guys used the Roland DS-90A digital monitors??... They are self powered and accept digital input from SP-DIF and Optical sources, as well as analog... I was wondering if they would be a good choice for people who work with CW cards. I've seen them on display connected with their analog inputs, and they sounded great.
