Hello all!!:)
What would be the cause of clicks and crackles when using Pulsar?
I have my ULLI set to the lowest setting possible (32ms or something)and I still get clicks when playing back or recording.
System:
P4T-E mobo (also, if anyone has one of these - does your HDD LED work?)
P4 1.8nw (not overclocked)
512mb Samsung RIMMS
Matrox G550 Video card
IBM 7200 SCSI drive (for audio)
IDE Seagate Baracuda System drive
USB enabled (not an option to turn this off as this will be needed for Logic 5 (presently on 4.

)
Win 98se (with upgrade packs - also tweaked to Subhumans faq(fixed virtual memory and sys.ini entry for memory management))
Any help would be fantastic!
Laterz

:)

You probably need to enable DMA for hard drive? Device manager/hard drive/properties I think. Having it unchecked is the only thing that ever gave me the snap crackle pops!

The only problem there is - There is no DMA check box in my HDD properties.
If you know anything about this please let me know......I prefer my Pulsar without the breakfast cereal!

I had that problem, in my case it was because I had installed the intel bus mastering drivers that came with my motherboard cd-rom, I uninstalled these and then the DMA box re-appeared. I don't know exactly how I did this, I think it was in the device manager, look for an Intel bus mastering driver in the hard disk area or perhaps in the add remove programme box.
I can't judge from your set-up if that's what you can/need to do. Perhaps someone with more knowledge could help!!! All I know is it took me months to work it out having never owned a PC before Pulsar! So I had those damned clicks and pops for ages.

It might be because of a cheap graficscart.
Try to minimise the program window while playing back and see if it disapears. In that case the grafics don´t get redrawn.I´m not an engineer, but I made that conclution on my own system. When I use cubase especially in XTC mode I have the same problem.

I have a Matrox G550 AGP graphix card, which I have been informed by virtually everyone that this is a great card for Pulsar.

have you tried turning off usb? that coupled with ACPI being enabled causes clicks, known problem, easily replicated, over and over.

Turning USB off is not an option as I am getting Logic 5 soon. - USB dongle

Did you go over the optimize threads already? (I dont usually respond to threads with 'clicks and pops' in the title because it's almost always computer config stuff with answers already around here... few basics include Standard PC for single processor in 2k/XP, no sharing IRQs, properly installed chipset/IDE drivers, and correct hardware configuration including IDE cables, good RAM etc)
BTW I have a similiar setup (same motherboard), and have USB enabled, and I have no clicks whatsoever. I run at the 4ms setting as well.

You can use USB with XP if you install XP with acpi turned off, but you cannot use usb with w98se, at least thats my experience

Not true on ANY of the Creamware installations I've done. (And that's quite a few).
All on Intel chipsets ofcourse.

Yes all my CUSL2/TUSL2 systems were fine even with USB on and in use by Microsoft optical mice. Win98SE, ME, and XP.

I turned USB on and off on the CUSL2 and the 820 based P3C-E using w98se and w2000 and got the clicks anytime USB was enabled. The first time that I have gotten USB to work with no clicks was on XP with ACPI disabled.
Isn't ACPI also a concern when installing W98se.

mgranger- I have a similar set-up and upgrading the chipset and ide drivers made a big difference. I still have a few clicks here and there, but no pops, and I'm trying to see how to settle my system...
How is it running for you?

You might also try doing a search for recent posts by Sandrob. He has an almost identical set-up, had lots of click and pop problems and is now mostly sorted. The responses to his problem will almost certainly be of use to you.

Eliam - What chipset/IDE drivers did you upgrade to? And did you say that you have a P4T-E?
Nice one!!

Does anyone have any info on ACPI?
Is this a concearn in Win98se. I have never seen an option to turn this off within the OS or the OS installer (for Win98se)

Well, there IS a way to turn it off in W95 and W98, but I'm not sure 'bout W98SE (should be the same). It goes like this:
- Start REGEDIT
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Detect
- Add a new string-value named ACPIOption and give it value "2"
- Quit REGEDIT
- Go into ControlPanel/AddHardware and check for new HW. It will remove ACPI and as a result find APM.
You might want to check with SiSoft Sandra to see if your BIOS support APM as well.
I have not tried this yet, but will do so this evening or tomorrow. I'll get back with my results (here or in a new thread) so it's up to you if you want to wait for that or try it yourself.
goodluck,
Rob

mgranger- I went on Intel website, followed the indication and downloaded the latest drivers for chipset and ide. Just follow the instructions, it is clear. As for the bios, I found the latest in the Asus site and flashed it. Don't forget to reconfigure it after, though-irq, unused ports, etc.
Yes, I have P4T-E, and once all my problems are solved, I'll be a happy man!

I did not find the thread on Sandrob's victory over the evil clicks... Anyone can link us to it? Or can Sandrob inform us himself?
