so far, no socket 1155 motherboards, ZERO, have worked correctly.

socket 1150 is fine.

I'd steer clear of Asus Z87/97s for PCI cards anyways.
Check out Supermicro as they were designed to use lots of RAM and Legacy support is their game....

Supermicro is a first-class manufacturer. it's MUCH higher quality than Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Asrock or any of the other gamer manufacturers. i would expect it to work quite well, especially with the XEON. you'll probably need to add the plastic backplane for non-XEON coolers.

i haven't seen the latest XEON coolers but usually, they attach with screws. XEONs are for commercial use after all.
to use a regular intel cooler, you may need the mounting hardware. it's not a big deal, just something to be sure about or you might have to wait a little longer when you discover you need it and want to order it at the time of the build.

yes, ready, but the motherboard may need the plastic mount. i believe that it comes with the motherboard, i just don't know for sure. it'd be easy to just send Supermicro an email asking if you need any additional hardware to mount a standard intel cooler for a non-XEON processor.

Gary, can you tell something about why Supermicro is better? Do they use higher quality components and PCBs? I don't run my PCs super hot, and I am used to long actual product life anyway (as far as I know).

I notice that the PCI-E to PCI adapter chip is the same as either MSI og Gigabyte uses. But that is just ONE component.

well, Supermicro makes boards for corporate servers. they're meant to run 24/7 and for a long time. gamer boards are made to be replaced regularly. gamer boards are only concerned with speed and flashy features. data integrity would be the primary concern for a commercial application like the Supermicro board was made for.

does any of this mean that one board would be better than the other? maybe, maybe not....but that board has a lot of PCI slots...

Shorter trace lines to RAM, all sorts of knowledge of extending the functions of the chipset in a tried and true BIOS w/o all sorts of bells and whistles too.
They are just top of the line consistently and profit still seems to be made from their embedded proprietary boards in a large sector of the server market.
Tyan and Foxconn have to build cheaper just to try and get a segment of their market share.

In short they are doing us a favor by adding consumer boards as they surely don't try to please gamers.
But anyone wanting to use large amounts of RAM will see Asus, Gigabyte and even Intel choking at 75% while Supermicro can keep stable performance at 90% of RAM, not even using ECC....

If you need Orchestral Instruments with Scope there's no better board to use for 64 to 128GBs.
These guys have designs for much more than that and long before others.

the customer service is usually quite good, as well.

I know the gal there by first name now since they even helped me redesign my 1U to accommodate another non Supermicro mobo.....
I keep telling them I want NGFF support and will immediately drop whatever I am using at the time, which is the latest ASRock w/ SAS and M.2 x 4.
So the support I receive from them is incredible and that's just from buying their chassis and 2 x custom PSU connectors, one for the MSI and now ASRock, as the chassis was meant for an older ATX mobo.

I haven't used a Supermicro mobo for years now but that DAW still runs Gigastudio really well w/ old Raptors, and I even sold the Scope cards and stuck in the ancient Lynx Stereo card from the late '90s.
I will drop the recent ASRock design and sell it as soon as Supermicro can get the PCI-e SSD M.2 connectors cranking at 4x speeds.
Those demons are so fast you can get the same latency as using your RAM for samples as one of these Samsung XP941s...
Plus a small mATX or MINI ITX can become a deadly DAW, expect to see these this summer.

Supermicro has an mATX board that rocks, but the only problem is the PCI-e SSD connector for M.2 is 2x, the same as our XITE-1 connectors. Fine for audio needs, but for streaming no different than the SATA III bottleneck @ 500+MBps.

Might is a crap shoot. Odds are far greater if you want legacy support, to go with those whose strengths are Legacy and high RAM bandwidth support.

If I were a gamer, MSI/NBC, ChiggaByte, AZues and ASSCock Fatality would be my choices.

Well, hopefully in the land between 'nifty' and 'crap shoot' - I've still made the right choice with the ASUS Z87C

If you buy this motherboard, I'd love to hear about your experiences with it. Another PlanetZ member bought one. First he was happy about it. Then, after two months or so, he had issues with the PCI boards swapping orders. Since then, we didn't hear more from him here at PlanetZ. So we never got to hear, what the origin of the problem was.
