Change IRQ in Win 7 64bit - mission impossible?

Post by CreamWare4Ever »

Hello people,

I can't change IRQ for VGA, despite replacement of VGA card. It changes to IRQ 10, but after restart it goes back to IRQ 16!?

How to permanently change VGA IRQ 16 channel to IRQ 10? I have tried to follow online resources but it seems to be hard.

I have i7 950 @ 3.6, 6GB RAM, Mobo: X58A-UD5

Scope card wit 5.1 v. 64bit drivers.

Any help will be highly appreciated!

Thanks.

i really hate to tell you this, because i know you won't be happy, but you only have a couple of choices here that i can see.

1. don't use those plugins.
2. change the slot of the Scope card.
3. get a different motherboard.

your Scope card is something that should last 10-20 years. the computer might not last more than a year, 5 at most...

You got a point there. The problems is that mobo only have one PCI slot as PCI express is taking over? So I can't change slot of Scope card :(

Somehow I managed to change VGA card to IRQ 10 but not permanently... So close...

Thanks anyway.

1) OK I think that I found a solution! In perfect world modern MOBOs should have more than one PCI slot. Because of that I will use this:

http://www.virtuavia.eu/shop/pci-expres ... 29855.html

Any experience with such things?

2) Currently, in MOBO BIOS my 3DSP card PCI slot is set to 100mHz spped. How much I can remember, on my old DAW, i got best performance if it is was set to 66mHz. Any suggestion which speed I may/should use. I can't find anything regarding that in Scope manuals.

Cheers.

honestly, i think that'll be more trouble and much more expensive than just getting a different motherboard.

Well where to find a new MOBO with several PCI slots?? Preferable Gigabytes. Mission impossible seems to be...

That is really a solution. On the other hand, it is 6 times cheaper that my current MOBO, so I'm just wondering... I will try to find a new one, for example GA-P55A-UD3R as it have 3 x PCI slots :)

The question is: Will Win 7 allocate PCI port to separate IRQ then?? That is the tricky part...

i just built a machine with one of these(overkill, but hey...):
http://www.supermicro.com/products/moth ... /X8DAi.cfm
if you want 3 PCI slots, it's tough, but they exist. if you want 2 PCI slots, they're everywhere.

yes, you should be able to get a free irq. you may need to disable a couple of usb controllers, but no big deal. as far as what win7 will do, that depends a lot on how the motherboard is designed, but yes, each slot should have it's own, although there will ceretainly be sharing with other devices, hence the probable need to disable a couple of usb controllers.

you really shouldn't need to pay more than $150 for a motherboard that will do all you need. the one i just posted cost quite a bit more....

Thanks for your input. Well that is the last (and best) solution if my first aid fixes doesn't do the job. I'm on i7 950mHz 3.07Ghz with Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 with one PCI slot. I don't have problem with just one pCI slot, rather that WIN 7 assigned VGA and lot of other stuff to same 16 IRQ:

IRQ 16 Intel(R) 7500/5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 3 - 340A OK
IRQ 16 NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS OK
IRQ 16 Standard-Dual Channel PCI IDE-styrenhet OK
IRQ 16 Intel(R) ICH10 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 3A40 OK
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 7500/5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 1 - 3408 OK
IRQ 16 Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 3A37 OK
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 7500/5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 2 - 3409 OK
IRQ 16 Sonic Core DSP-Board OK

So you mean tha I can disable all USB ports there?

yes, but that's terrible.

while that may be a very good motherboard, it's achetecture is not even close to ideal for your purposes.

there are plenty(well, enough if it's a socket 1366 cpu) of motherboards that will work much better. save yourself grief and just get it over with. :)

Yes, I will definitely go for an Gigabyte GA-P55 , but first I need someone from Gigabyte forum to confirm that Win7 doesn't place inserted sound card and VGA into same IRQ. I can always go back to WinXP :x

it's not putting the sound card and video together, it's putting the pci slot and video together. that's because of the archetecture of the motherboard and it's gigabytes fault. if Scope wasn't realtime, it wouldn't matter.

without meaning to hijack this thread, gary could you tell me a bit more about that system you built using the X8DAi. Did you install it with both XITE-1 and 3 PCI Scope cards or just one or the other. I am looking to upgrade my existing DAW and it would be good to have the option of running XITE-1 and my 3 Scope cards in the same machine in order to save space in the studio, in particular by not needing 2 more LCD monitors etc if there is just the 1 system.

Also what video card did you use for it.

Sorry to hijack again and if you would prefer I can start a new thread :)

Cheers

t_tangent, if it's the screens that you need space for, you can try a KVM Switch (Keyboard-Video-Mouse). They're cheap, and allow two computers to be attached to 1 set of keyboard/video/mouse. A quick key combo, something like CTL-ALT-Print, is used to switch between the two.

Just one alternative.

Hi jk,

That may be just the ticket. I have heard of those switches before but didnt actually think about it in the context of using one in the studio, so now you mention it, it is certainly an option. It would be interesting to hear what gary has done with that mobo mentioned above though, and why in particular he has used that board.

But thanks for the tip, and definitely worth considering. Cheers :)

i used it because my client is a wild man!
yes, it would probably work with 3 cards and an xite, but i suspect that a kvm and a couple of cheap computers would be cheaper and better. no one needs dual 1366 xeons! well, almost no one....

people are funny. there are plenty of socket 1156 i7 motherboard with 3 pci slots, and they'll work just about the same as a 1366 i7 would, both machines will do plenty of work(there are even a few 1366 motherboards with 3pci slots). if someone is really using all that dsp, there is NO reason to stress over the cpu. one could easily build a current, cheap machine that would last for years, why stress? why not put the cards in an older, maybe even free machine and then use the sequencer in the xite machine with a current motherboard and processor? the cards and the xite can only connect with each other through their hardware i/os anyway and that setup would be more than powerful enough to do whatever. heck, i've got a p4 and 3 cards that still makes me money and got me a hit song on the radio...

Thanks for the info gary. Yes, I too still have the Scope cards running in a P4 DAW, and it actually works perfectly adequately. I have my XITE-1 connected to a Dell m6500 laptop which works great with Win7 32bit, but not in 64bit so that is why I am trying to work out what to do. I guess you are right though, its probably easier to just leave the Scope PCI DAW as is, and then build a cheaper 64bit DAW for XITE with both connected to a kvm, as you and jksuperstar suggest. Anyway I will give it some serious thought, so thanks for the advice and I will let you know what happens in due course :)

Cheers for now and best let this thread get back on track again :)
