Help with OS 9 needed....

Dear forum members,

i am currently trying to install an OS 9 Scope system with no success
at all :( .

I downloaded the latest Scope version from the Soniccore website
and unzipped it via Stuff It. Then i started the installer. It started,
but wasn´t able to find any files apparently. It brought a long list of
missing file errors which refered to a false path. If, for instance,
the root folder was named "Scope", the missing file error was
"OS 9/Scope/.....xyz is missing". I tried to put the installer files
in a folder named "OS 9", but the same errors occurred, this time
in the form of "OS 9/OS 9/Scope/.... is missing".

I also tried to run Scope directly (without installer), but this didnt
work either. No i lack ideas....probably i did something stupid, or missed
something essential.

Hopefully one of you could provide some insights - i really lack experience
on my new old Mac (G4 733, OS 9.22).

Thank you in advance, kind regards, Richard

it's been a real looooooooong time since I last installed scope on my old G3, but my guess is that your machine is too 'new'.

I remember that G4 is the last generation of macs that can hold scope cards, so this might be not the best of news for you.
I hope someone else can say I'm wrong. :(

early G5 pci-x slots are NOT interchangable with all pci specs. Scope cards use 5vlt signaling and the pci-x slot is 3.3vlt, as i rememeber. there's no way a Scope card will work there.

Thank you. But i looked again and found that i was wrong
- actually it is a G4, not a G5 as i typed above.
So installing should work, as far as i know.
The problem is that the installer just isn´t able
to find any files, apparently.
I really don´t know what to do - any ideas ?

Thank you , Richard

isn't it just a matter of copying the files into the proper directory?

what version is this 'latest version'? I'm still using 4.0 on OS9.2.2. i have 4.5, but never bothered to install.
copied drivers to the appropriate folders before installing?

@gary: i remember the install being handeled by PACE, but don't know if that was dropped after SFP3.

my computer is tucked far away. i need to finish the new studio first.

well, it's been some time... :D
afair 9.2 was a significant change in the code (though it looks visually identical to any version 9 OS) by Apple
I'd would install it under an older version, probably 9.0 and then move the extensions and control panel stuff manually.
Probably just the installer going nuts.
If you're really stuck, I have some old machines at the company.
I could install it during some maintance routines in the next couple of days and either tell you how it works (or fails) or send you an image of the installation.

cheers, Tom

Really scraping the old braincells on this one - I do however remember having a completely stable system on G4 with OS9.2.2 and SFP3.1c. It was one of the 500 models though not 700. Were the 700s the silver or 'wind tunnel' model that was a problem generally (to be honest it's all a bit hazy)?

i believe v4 was last, but the 3.1's would be fine....

Thank you alot for all your input !
Tried a manual install. Same result - the app searched for some
specific (Pep) dlls and scrips, without success.
Strange. Is there any chance the Scope file was zipped on PC,
destroying some file alotments /names. Could this been possible ?

Maybe someone has an idea.

Thank you again, Richard

I can confirm Richard's experiences - I downloaded the latest version for Mac and the failing pathnames were not related to blanks in disk- or folder names.
Probably one of the scripts has those references 'hard coded', which would mean you need the exact same folder structure.
I didn't have the patience to dig through it, but instead started the installer from a version 3.1c CD.
This worked as expected. Asked for the driver, rebooted, asked for keys, installed, took a while... ready to use.

cheers, Tom
