Hi all,
I want to connect and external device to the above and it appears to have a 3.5mm mini jack socket - is this an optical connection?

No, you can insert a "3.5mm jack to cinch" cable there...

I am coming from optical so will need to get a converter and then go into my Scope Pro card.
