the demand wasn't quite overwhelming, so I think it's safe to do so.

it's a method to validate file integrity after transmission (checksum).
never used it myself (and lack the details...), but it seems a fairly common standard today.

They are small files that can be compared against the downloaded file to make sure that there have been no errors caused by dropped bits while dl'ing.
