I agree with him 100% on his comment about loss of dynamics in a mix when compressing and adding several tracks " in the box ."
I noticed this during ProTools mixdowns and while not knowing anything about the Mac or ProTools I always asked the engineers to use seperate outs to the hardware console and sum everything there. Of course engineers would piss and moan as they had to do extra work, but I did remind them that their name was also on the mix...
I still do this w/ my rack mounted analog mixer at live gigs for my synths.
I re route the analog hardware into the project where I can add effects, and then spit everything out to a 4 BUSS / 4U analog mixer, then to the powered monitors.
There is a difference, and yes it's more wires and hassles, but the sound is what we are after at the end of the day.
I did hear a few mixes at MIDIWorkz here in Las Vegas where all outputs were summed in an analog mixer and I can definately say YES, it's the way to go for a mix that sounds confined.
