World Premiere at IDFA (Amsterdam)

The documentary "Hair India" that I composed the original music for will be screened the 24th of November at the IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), at the Pathé Tuschinski, Reguliersbreestraat 26. at 19:30.
If I can I'll try to be there.

Not at the moment....that music has been done in exclusive for the production and although I'm the owner of the rights I can't make it public now. Uses different than the combination with the images has to be decided eventually with the production...But although it can be nice to listen to, the power of the images and the music together is much stronger.....Also a DVD is planned.

Anyway, this morning i booked for Amsterdam that day, so if anyone is there it will be cool to meet. I think that you can see the show with a common movie show ticket....

Hopefully (and I think this will probably be the case, seeing as it's a film festival), you'll be in one of the older theatres. They were built in the '20s, I think, and have some amazing art-deco interior design work.

Actually some film music and game music represent an own piece of art.
I wonder if it is so as you say alfonso that 'it works' with the pictures only, or 'it stans' also on its own.

Well, the music itself can be pleasing anyway...a lot of it retains a sense also without the images, especially a certain part of it, while some other parts are just serving the context....i
There is some of this and some of that, in any case the relation with the images is important, that has been always part of the process.
I decided to avoid a descriptive approach from the perspective of the watcher and I also wanted to avoid a strict ethnological-musical approach which can become a bit too standard in such cases. I tried to imagine the inner worlds of the people in the story, which is a true story, and this lead to distinct atmospheres, two mental temperatures that pretty express the deep anthropological differences shown in the documentary.
The way I did this was to dig inside myself and put out a music that is a bit out of a precise style, out of geography, out of schemes. I just try to put out what the empathy with the humans represented in the images triggered inside me. There are also some situations in which some music coming from the environment or from that social context was perfect and we (with the director) decided not to change it.

Anyway, I'm not too objective now, it has been a hard work and the most difficult part has been to reach some simplicity and to be really essential...when you begin you have tons of ideas and everything could be wrapped in music. Going deeper you realize that you're not making a videoclip but you have a story to tell and the effect of the music is increased if there is a balanced use of it, when it is necessary. Our brain halves can process some definite amounts of information of each kind, too much stuff is tiring and you loose part of the message.

The trailer, as usual is a mix up of things and it doesn't follow the image-music relation. In the hair extensions ad there is the original ad music, I have no idea what it is but it's part of something real reported as is. In another point of the documentary there is also a "Bollywood" music used with regular permission, as the producer liked this track very much. The "bollywood" sounding track that can be heard in the trailer which basically goes together with the television "telenovela" images is done by me, as the disco track in the mode event, but those where just things I offered as a way to reduce permission requests for already published material. The core of the music I did are basically some guitar work, both electric and acoustic, for the more "spiritual" parts, sometimes together with some synth work, and a minimalistic,acid and somehow cheesy modern rhythmic theme to represent the social rampage and the new "western" ways of life. A deep, introspective, free on tempo cosmic feeling vs. a clocked, standardized optimistic but somehow bi-dimensional life approach.

The electric guitar is my strat played through my flexor-technology amp emulation plugin, which at the moment is going under further development as it has to be tweaked in its extreme settings, all the other sounds are made with Modular+Flexor, also some sample managing is done through modular, except for a bass line in the cheesy urban acid thing which is made with the SixString. Ha, a mention has to go for the electric piano sound in the urban thing that is Kensuguro's M3 version of Seventythree. Fantastic sound, i.m.o.

I heard your Guitar device over the phone when I was chattin' w/ GaryB a while back, it sounded really nice.
He must have a quality speakerphone, because I asked him if he was playing a Gibson ES335, as it had that semi hollow humbucking sound.

It is getting much better than that . there were some extreme settings in which some digital clipping could occur, now it's mostly gone. I want it to saturate in a pleasant way, no matter how brutal the signal at its input, but without using limiting or anything that can alter the dynamic responsiveness which is my first goal. It has to feel completely like an analog unit. I said too much now...


Anyway, i think that any guitar sound over the phone will resemble an hollowbody....
