I dont know how.
after they screwed up 98 so badly with ME, they could use the foundation of windows NT4 to build 2000 and XP from. now that have screwed that up with vista, i dont know what they have to fall back on.

not to mention all the delays and broken promises of vista.

whatever it is, im sure none of your old drivers will work. i just hope soniccore will be able to deal with it.

The problem with M$ is the business model: when the product is enough good after bugfixing and updates it is time to stop selling it, instead of starting...
Now that XP is solid it is replaced by a new unstable one; when Vista will be stable it will be replaced by Vienna and son on... (btw, sorry to disagree Neutron but ME had a better memory management than 98 and was stabler than early XP )
Other software products just get *better* or enhanced with updates (typically free software), not rewritten and re-sold every three years.

The only OS upgrade I ever regretted buying was Windows 95. I accidentally bought the 20 disc floppy version instead of the single disc CD version. I didn't realize the error until I got home and opened the box.

I estimated the round trip to the store and back and decided it was simpler to just suck it up and install it as is and chalk it up as a learning experience. Always read the fine print

this is so typical of the computer world. the first offering is rarely the actual upgrade, but more of a stepping stone, like windows ME....

maybe for you. all i know is that ME had awesome MIDI timing compared to 98, but not much else.
XP was a big improvement for me because it supported dual CPU\

a lot of programs "improvements" seem to be a way to sell faster CPU. for example i use photoshop 4 for most smaller jobs because it does all the essentials, and opens as fast as notepad by the time CS2 has opened i could have finished what i was doing and closed it.

Well, I'm using Vista for 3 months now (at work, not in my studio obv.), and I must admit, I actually like it. Even though I had to upgrade almost all of my progs and tools to get them work again...

Vista ended up like it did because microsoft has turned in to one of those companies where everyone is in useless meetings all the time talking about "tipping point" "outside the box" and "paradigm shift" and the rest of the time is spent making powerpoint presentations to show at the meetings.

It's way too early to say what will really be in Win7. It's not gonna be there there next year for consumers, as it's not there for developers right now. Usually Microsoft products have two beta versions and numerous "Technology Preview" versions in the middle, and finally maybe some release candidates. Win7 is not even at Beta1.

But something I can say, and it is that I don't believe the following to be true:

Of course, nothing is sure until The Day has arrived, but I'm pretty confident that Win7 will use the same driver model than Vista SP 1 and Windows 2008.
