Hello people!

When one is caught up doing "stuff", the rest of the world dissapears in a mist.

I mentioned erlier that iv'e thrown my self into the DIY buissness.
And i have alot of projects going on. All related to music though.

Well here are some new links for you to check out.

The language of these pages is in Swedish, and in that forum I am known as "Foona". The name of the forum is "The Swedish Electronics Forum".

These two links will show you pictures of some of the work i have done.
The projects revolves around Ray Wilsons synthesizer SoundLab Minisynth.
I call my version the SoundLab Dubwision.
I purchased the kit from Elby Designs in Australia and put it together.
Then i built the casing myself.
The case design is a mix of Moog and Creamware ASB cases.

Thank you all so much for your apreiciation of my work!

I did have some minor background in electronics,
but not close enough to create my own circuits.

But then i decided i couldn't do what i wanted to do with my music.
Problem is, stuff on the market never really is specific for one self as a person or producer.
(exept for the CW boards of course )
So the only thing to do is, make your own stuff to your own specifications.

The Ray wilson's minisynth SoundLab was a test for me.
To see if i still had skills with the soldering iron.
And i did.

So i started purchasing surplus components to steal prices, resistors,
ic-chips, switches, knobs, electronic tools, instruments and lab equipment you name it.
I purchased old books from the 70's about basic analog and digital electronics.

Remember this, books about 20-40 years old are still being used today.
They still have basically the same information as in the new books.
Everyday i studdy at least 20-50 pages, even doing "homework".
And in three months i gathered the information needed to design
my own filter, PSU, deelay, reverb, chorus and flanger curcuits.

All to my own specific specifications

Im actually going back to the analog stuff that made music sound
so warm, fuzzy and "ticklish" back in the days.

All i need now is the equipment to make my own PCB's (printed circuit boards)
and then i'll be completley independent.
Imagine the freedom to build whatever you want, whenever you want.
From electronic nut crackers to converters for using a TFT screen for your old Atari ST
Or even building new bigger (16Mb) memory boards for it. Very cool!

I never thought i would get this far, but i put my mind to it and it paid of.
Im actually suprised. Iv'e never ever been this dedicated to "schoolwork".

So keep your eyes out, cuz there will be alot of new electronical gadgets
in my studio soon.

Right now im building input/output stages and filters for my two latest projects.
In a couple of days i'll have two new HAMMOND spring reverb units fuzzin up my Dub tracks.

I also wanted to let you know there is one more demo/teaser track up on my MySpace site.
Track is called "Dubwision" and i dedicate it to my first DIY synt, the "SoundLab" Dubwision.

Search youtube for "curcuit bending".

BTW, did you know that you can use free simulation software (based on Spice models) to test your circuits, even to design multiple pole filters?
Here is the link where you can find LTspice/SwitcherCAD III and FilterCAD programs, all free!

Cool stuff Jingaelin. Like hifiboom said earlier, that mp3 track sounds awesome, just the sort of sound I love. I was looking at Musicfrom outerspace a few weeks ago and wondering whether I could start on a small project like this, so I think with a bit of reading and study it might be feasible. I dont know much about electronics, but there is some great info on the elby-designs site and loads of tutorials on the net. Just reading this site now

yes great information .... Actually, i tend to consider that my audio/gear purchases must remain an "investment" (except computing stuff ). It is easier to sell an "official" synth or hardware ; even a good DIY stuff has no "official" price so you must keep it as long as you live . The same for a guitar : a Fender or a Gibson is often an investment although many other brands gives you - sometimes - better results/performance for a lower price. That is why I have also dropped the idea of DIY preamp for instance ... But your pictures is a serious temptation !

to me sounds coming from a analog synths still have a bit more "air" inside than digital stuff. They sound a bit more distant when listening to them via headphones...

Maybe this is introduced by the fact that analog signal chains have a low noise always, something like an "natural error" which randomizes every circuit path and so sound less static.

This could be an interesting project to add slow amount of random or dither noise to all circuit path in cw modular patch and see what happens...

I`m pretty sure the static and sterile sound of digital synths comes from its perfect calculation. Apart from aliasing effects there is no error at all...

t_tangent, the SoundLab is very cool synth.
I made it sound like a SID-synthesizer yesterday.
I sat all night playing old game songs getting all emotional

I purchased three PCB's from MFOS for the WSG synth.
One for me and two for my PTC-Crew members
Im also designing cases and panels for these little critters too.
Pictures and soundclips will be up in like 2-3 weeks.
Got alot on my plate at the moment.

Thanx to my "gung-ho" shopping i allready had all components at home.
Exept for some IC-chips, wich i ordered from Hong Kong via Ebay.

If your'e looking for particular FX or synthesiser chips and op-amps (BBD's)
then look for "HongKongSuperSeller" on Ebay.
Shipping and handling costs are fair and you also have shipping insurance
available if you want it.
Iv'e purchased lots of stuff from them and its been good so far.

The soundcklicks are not related to my CW boards or software.
Those "clicks" are my oscillator op's "clipping".
I have a faulty resistor somwhere in my curcuit apparently.
But can't find it untill i recieve the Oscilloscope i purchased.
The suspense is unbarable

And investments like these are very special.
To make it by your own hands, making it work, and then adding it to your music.
Trust me, the worth is much larger then with comercial stuff ready to plug n 'play.
Not in money, but in spirit. May sound tacky but...
just try it just once and you'll see.

I've think about that too, but I've found that it is interinsting only if you do an important amount of pcb, ..If the starting kit is not so much expensive, with all product needed and the pcb, the drilling tool etc, a printed pcb will cost you about 7-10 euro (count the bad one, the material..), then you wwill have to drill them..then your time..
and think you will have to store some dangerous product, not so good if you have some childrens in the house..
when you see that MFOS and other sell ready PCB for a so little price..the save is not so much..but the independent thing is the good one..
maybe you can take a look too to alternative printing solution, as "toner" method" etc..that are cheaper and sometime don't need a big printing system.
