i have an asus p4c800-e deluxe and for now i'm still with PADA 133 drives.
but i need a new drive for samples streaming (kontakt2) and i'm in doubt if buy a serial ata drive.

for now, i have disabled SATA in bios, and, honestly, i even don't know what i should set to activate it...
my worst fears are that some raid controller will conflict with my 3 scope cards...
what are your experiences with this topic?

moreover, do you have a fast and good HDD to suggest for sample streaming?

I have sata only with my P4C800E-DLX. well, sata hdd, of course. I still have a pata optical drive.

main menu -> ide configuration -> onboard ide operate mode
set to enhanced, and enhanced mode to sata.
configure sata as raid -> no.

this is about the ICH controller. the additional raid chip is the promise, which you probably disabled during initial setup in the onboard devices menu.

I have sata hdds only. I assume they work ok with your existing drives. since the sata drives will become most probably the primary and secondary master drives, and the others third primary and slave (only guessing here, since I have only one pata drive), be sure to check boot device priority.

the sata drive may introduce itself as first disk, and if you don't change the pata drive to be the first hdd, you won't be able to boot from it. they show up with an identifier string where you can guess the maker and device name from.

well, I'm stuck with wd drives all these years, but I read the samsung spinpoint series are fast and silent, too.

actually, i will have one single PATA as primary master (with OS) and a sinlge SATA and primary slave. 2 disk are sufficient for my needs (i have 2 PATA hdd even now)
on the secondary ide channel i have only the cdrom.

any way, if you are using SATA without problems (i don't plan to use raid, so i dont have to activate additional hardware/driver...) i will begin to consider mounting a SATA...

there is no such thing as sata being a slave device.
the old yoda statement ("always two they are. a master, and an apprentice" (slave) ) isn't valid anymore
sata drives are always master. there is no need for that mechanism, since they have an exclusive connector.

and btw, as always when touching your disk setup...
make sure you have a backup.
