Streaming A / V HDD's

Post by dawman »

When I had my first Gigastudio / Scope DAW built, I was thinking the fastest HDD's ( Raptors ), and the lowest latency RAM would be optimal.

I noticed that with the Raptors, I can get approximately 40 more voices of polyphony using GS 160 2.54.

But GS3 Orchestra didn't seem to benfit any different than my 200GB HDD that I bought for Cubase content.

So I was wondering since my Raptors will be the oldest hardware in my DAW's, w/ the exception of the Scope cards  , would a HDD w/ lower access times be a better choice, or would the overall highest throuput be optimal?

Surely the footprint of samples made in the RAM from Giga are extremely low latency, but would 8msec.'s access time w/ a high throuput be better if I am streaming audio from several VSTi's and possibly Cubase ?

With that in mind I am still a Western Digital kind of guy, because they sent me 8 HDD's that have never failed me, and that's why I am nervous. This means sooner or later they will probably go out on me, and since I am in a mission critical enviroment, it might be a good time to remove these and since they still work, keep 'em as Hot spares for my RAID cages.

If there are any HDD gurus here, does this look to be a viable solution for what I have described?

Many Thanks, and Be Festive !!
