Do I need a new power supply? EVGA 8600GTS

Hello there guys

I have swapped the XFX 8600 for the EVGA 8600GTS video card, it is better for what I need to do.

I have investigated and it should be enough power 420watts, but…

The box of the EVGA states:

400 watt power supply with a minimum of 26 amps on the +12 volt rail.

How can I find out about this? I have not a clue of these specifications.

What do you think guys, is it enough or I must go with a new PSU?

I'm confused here... the spec you posted for your PSU clearly shows the amperage for each rail...

Power Output:
+3.3V: Min 0.3A, Max 30A
+5V: Min 1.5A, Max 40A
+12V: Min 0.2A, Max 18A
-5V: Min 0.0A, Max 0.3A
-12V: Min 0.0A, Max 0.8A
+5VSB: Min 0.0A, Max 2.0A

I see 18 Amps for the +12v rail, so not enough power for your needs

26 Amps sounds like a lot, I suspect that you are going to need a new PSU 850 watt or above.... maybe more !!

I like, and use an Antec PSU, get the True Quottro 1000... it's Nice !!!

This seems strange because I have a 8800GTS 320 and these are the power requirements that are specified.

High End SLI PC ( im assuming this is the 8800 GTX series) 500-600w power supply with a minimun of +12v @ 30A for all PC components

Mid range SlI PC (im aqssuming this is the 8800 GTS series) 450-500w running +12v @ 26A

Entry level (im assuming this is the 8600 series) 400-450w running +12v @ 22A

So saying this it seems strange the 8600's need as much as your saying,
I think it should run fine mate , unless the EVGA ones come serverly overclocked then the 26A would preobably make sense then .

My Coolermaster 500W has its +12v rail split into 2 both running @ 16A , Giving a total of 32A across the entire 12V rail. Even comes with the 6 pin conecter straight out of the PSU to power the 8800 and its running like a dream.

I have seen forums people reporting that the Specs for the PSU's for the cards are a bit overkill, However if u start to have stability problems then thats the sure fire sign u need a beefier PSU

There you’ve got the exact card we are talking about. Now, the requirements:

Minimum System Requirements
• 400 Watt power supply with a minimum of 26 amps on the +12 volt rail.
• For SLI configurations please visit: www.slizone.com for requirements.
• Available 16 channel PCI Express slot
• One PCI Express supplementary power connector or two available hard disk drive power connectors from the power supply that are connected to nothing else in the system (smaller floppy disk drive connector is not sufficient)

So have u actually Tried to use it with that PSU ?? If it works and is stable and doesnt get too hot then you should be okay

What ever hapened to So called " PLUG and Play" lol! .. ITs more like " Plug and Hope it works"

its like .. Buy this ... then u open it then it says ... u have to Buy this .. then u goto Buy that and there is none at the shops .. then a month later you get to finally use your product!!

Yea, true... It's crazy, but well... I have to do with what I have, and I'm better off nerves and anger which will not help.

Well… reading the Hec reviews, I realised that I was trying to run a brand new Ferrary Testa with the wrong engine… no… I did the “extra” effort, I have no money left right now… But the system PSU must be of good quality. I have said it too many times in this forum, and cannot contradict such an important statement.

I went to the shop with the last quits I had, and asked for the best possible power supply I could afford, and all the technicians in unison recommended me the Enermax FMA II, which is this one:

I really hope to have done a good choice, unfortunately, I had no time to review anytying this time, I must get to work.
