Good post Eric.
This addresses one of the most common misconceptions about digital audio mixing. As Eric points out, it is a lack of knowledge of the difference between analog and digital metering.
I always see people pumping channel levels in their DAWs so that they're almost hitting 0db. Then they put some horrible brick wall limiter on the master out. And they wonder why their mixes sound like crap
Mixing hot is useful on analog mixers (to get the nice harmonic distortions). On digital it is not useful at all. It sounds better to mix so that the final master out is naturally close to 0db, not with the fader down or with a brickwall limiter on it.
