I'm well aware of the issues surrounding chipsets for our platform, and have had great sucsess w/ P4SCT+II, and 865PERL. However I'm really starting to enjoy the benefits of BlueTubes, and other quality VST FX in conjunction with Scope/GS3. Therefore I am looking to upgrade to the best single threaded CPU for ultimate stability and performance. AMD FX CPUs really seem to have an edge in respect to the amount of VST FX that I could use live. Keep in mind that I play live with one of my boxes, and wish to load one large project without having to reload Scope, or GS3. I'm using 3 Scope Project cards, and Solaris couldn't be happier. It seems to be the only synth I use now, for I'm sampling all my Vectron,Bluewave patches, and Solaris gets mixed with Oberheim, and Studio Electronics analog, and B2003 gets its own outputs to the rotary cabinets.
My dilemma is that I have so many VST FX and samples all loaded at beginning of gig, that I need more juice for GS3. Scope is doing a fine job of adding FX, and mixing. Scope really makes GS3 Orchestra shine.
I really like the Pentium M780 for it's short pipeline and low power. It smokes my P4 3.4GHz ES on the Supermicro, but the motherboard choices are slim, and OC'ing makes me nervous.So as much as I want to go with Intel, it seems as though they are more concerned with thread spawning, and not single threaded apps.

AMD FX60 is a DUAL CORE, in fact the FX 57 is the last single core FX processor from AMD.

I'm sorry. I meant the FX57. I assumed it was the last single threaded CPU. Please respond back. You were very fast the first time.

I am in the same position than you. I need 45% from my P4 as I use Halion with a lot of "acoustic instruments" and I am currently stuck with the decision to go to either AMD or INTEL.

Next intel techno (CONROE) is interesting, but not only the processor, but the MB AND the chipset is concerned.

Currently there is no socket 479 MB with PCI and there is no infos if the chipset (975 if I am correct: check annandtech for this) is perfectly suited with this processor.

My understanding brings me to think that when it is possible it is better to choose chipset already designed for multiprocessing (not multi threading) when we want to use DUAL CORE.

By the way, an FX60 is a X2 4800 at 2.6Ghz UNLOCKED. It means that the difference of pricevs performance 450euro for 8% increase is intersting if you intend to overclock it.
the FX 57 run at 2.8GHz.

I've decided to keep using the 865perl and try my P4 3.4EE from the studio box. I forgot that the extra cache and 400MHz might just do the trick. I just love Nomad Factorys Blue Tubes on GS3. But they tend to chew up CPU cycles. Besides, the studio box is more for Scope, and the various synths I've collected. The 3.0GHz Northwood should swap out O.K.
