hi

i must connect balanced output from a16ultra
into a analog mixer with unbalanced input(tape input)
which cables is better to use balanced
or unbalanced?
in the analog mixer(allen heath gs3)i have
a mic input too balanced but in this case i need a particular cable like stereo to xlrfemale i guess.
I have a similar doubt about recording purpouse because the mixer direct output is unbalanced and the a16ultra is balanced.

anyone have experienced similar situation?
is better use unbalanced or balnced 1/4 cables

The good thing of A16 Ultra is they accept both balance and unbalance signal in bank of 8. There is a little jumper at the back of the unit for this special setup. This means you can record balanced signal to input of A16 Ultra and output to unbalanced mixer or vice versa without any problem. Try to see your A16 Ultra manual..

About cable..., when you config your A16 Ultra right, use balanced cable for balanced operation.., and use unbalanced cable for unbalanced operation..

Or easier, you can use all balanced cable but change only head of the plugs. Use balanced 1/4 phone jack for balanced operation and use unbalanced 1/4 phone jack for unbalanced operation WITH summing RING & SLEEVE together at the cable. It doesn't matter for the other end of XLR jack.

good to hear about discussion, i bought a RNLA limiter and it has unbalanced ins and balanced outs and i thought i had to come out of the rca plugs on the card. I want to come out of the a16 ultra, if it takes both balanced and unbalanced that would be my answer,cheers

i have bought a used a16ultra i haven't the manual but i have seen the jumpers in the rear panel i'll look into this

strange when i output thru the ultra 16 via the SBC when everythings is 0db, my limter (the RNLA) comes in at -12db when i put it thru the ultra

That's correct. The output of the SBC is about 12 dB lower than the input when all faders are at 0 dB. I noticed that a while ago

i used the mastering preset on the SBC which is more db on o/p, then pass it thru the opti, so i have 0.1 on the output digitally, but when i go to the outboard limiter via the ultra, i have less db so i have to crank the output of the limiter, i think there is a -10db thing going on with the ultra

There are DIP switches at the back of the A16U to set the levels of the inputs and outputs to +4dBu or -10dBv. Check if the OUT-A and OUT-B switches are set UP, if not, put them up and try again.

all of mine are up

another issue to ask is how do you maintain the optimaster levels of -0.1 after outputting thru external audio gr, i find the outboard stuff gets driven too hard at o threshold and unity gain

metering is approximate, use your ears and eyes both. also, there is a difference between rms and peak meters.
