Hi all - hope you are enjoying the holidays.

I just gave up trying to record midi from an Alesis DM-5 into Ableton Live 5. The lengths of the recorded midi notes are too short to trigger drums like ReDrum et al. So I have to manually extend them after recording.

Is this a DM-5 thing or is this a general problem with all similar modules? Seems to me it would be great if there was a way to set a minimum (or fixed) length of the notes when recording.

Has anyone tackled this problem before?

the dm5 isn't a sequencer, just a converter. "note on" is "note on", regardless of the time till "note off". i don't know about live, but most sequencers let you modify note off positions, both graphically and realtime through hold parameters. a drum sample only requires a "note on" usually, since drum sounds have short and fixed decays.

in short, midi from your dm5 should be usuable. double check all your settings, both in the sequencer and in the dm5. i've used the d4 with no problems before, and i really doubt the midi implimetation is all that different in the dm5. midi is midi.

hmm, I see what you are saying. I was thinking that since all "drum notes" are just trigger notes it would be a useful feature in drum modules to be able to simulate a longer "length", ie a settable delay for the midi off message.

But as you are saying - the drums should really be sending a note off directly after the note on (I guess they missed specifying a trigger midi message ;o).

Since I am seeing the midi messages in the sequencer, I guess the DM-5 is doing its job. I am gonna go look more closely to what can be done within AL5.
