Hi,

no you don't have to.

Just go for a good powersupply, with 500W or more, depending on what you have inside the pc. The more harddrives, cd/dvd stations, pci cards you have, the more wattage you will need.

I don't recommend less than around 500W this days.

Avoid the likes of Q-tek, Sweex, and no name brands.

Antec, Zalman, Seasonic, and the likes are good ones.

I've read lots of good things about Seasonic S12 serie. Fans are on only if they are needed and if you have other quiet fans in your chase, I believe this PS won't make any noise.
Models: 450W,500W,600W

That 500W value is a bit inflated. I have an Antec TruPower 420W, running 2x cards (15DSP and 3DSP), 2x SATA drives, 2x optical drive, ATI Radeon 9800pro, and no problems. 400W and up should be fine, unless you have like 8 harddrives.

I had an antec 420 in my scope box for 2 years and the 5.5v line started sagging, bringing the 3v (and cpu core) down with it. I just put a 520w one in there to make sure that it lasts this time. Mind you its a p3 box running @ 700/100 with an Asus p2bf. Not exactly challenging and I think I have only 1 20Gb harddrive attached (cd-rom and floppy are both disconnected out of efforts to keep the previous PSU going a bit longer).

Check out the stability tests for the OCZ Powerstream series. Seperate control for seperate rails. Nice if you work live shows with redundant RAID 1, or 3, or 5 arrays. My Raptors could'nt be happier. GS3 really gives my HDD's a workout. Especially with Gigapulse having it's own RAID 1 array, It's a must for me to have stable rails.
