After a year & 1/2 of using my laptop/Magma rig, I'm currently shopping for a dedicated Mid-Tower. After shopping around for RAM, I had a few questions.

I'm looking at these Crucial Ballistix DIMMS, and they're 3x the price of some Kingston Value DIMMS. Now I know memory is super important, but Kingston is pretty damn stable, in spite of my preference for Crucial. It seems, besides marketing, the main differences in spec is a .5 CAS latency difference.

Obviously there are other differences, but in terms of what I can use to compare anticipated performance differences, does a CAS latency of 3 have much impact on audio recording, or is it just a gaming thing?

Either way, any other recommendations for well-balanced (cost/performance) RAM would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Sam

it depends a bit on the motherboard which would be the fastest ram usable, price vs. performance. with the intel d865perl i use a mid speed(still cas 2 or 2.5) corsair dimm that is very reasonable at $150 for 1 gig. I'll have to think on that. Looks like a good set o chips. My instinct is to get a single 1GB DIMM, even if it's slower so I can move up to 4GB.

I'm going to be rocking an Athlon 64, using an (I think) MSI Neo2... the nForce 4's look sweet, but I feel like I'll be shooting myself in the foot only having 3 PCI slots to put my cards in. I can already smell IRQ sharing nightmares with no recourse. Anyway, that is neither here nor there.

My hope is to be able to run along with a couple of P100's, my echo delay, etc., the Bosendorfer Piano plug, BFD, etc. So having a LOT of RAM would really come in handy. Just not sure if there's any REAL advantage given what I'm doing, to having ultra fast RAM versus more RAM.

anyone? More or faster RAM for big sample-bank apps like BFD, Bosendorfer?
