Hehe, my friend - who is a two-left-hand man regarding computers told me once a tip that I wouldn't suspect him to know

If you have two Macs and would like to transfer files between them ocasionally you can connect them both with a plain FireWire cable. Than you have to boot one of them holding "t" - it will then act like a firewire disk  . Of course the second computer should be started as usual.

Even better you can boot from that target drive, which means you can stick e.g. a powerbook in target mode via firewire to another comp and boot it with your powerbooks config/system. Very nice for transfering/copying a system to another comp, as well.

so far, i have only been able to do this on my G4 powerbook. neither my b/w G3 nor the imac (one of the first) can do this.
all have 10.3.9 installed...
maybe it's a processor limited feature?

What doesn't work ? Booting in target mode or booting a system from that target disk ?
Btw, for simple file transfering you can also connect the comps with FireWire via Ethernet Protocoll. This way you don't need to reboot the comp.

thanks, wolf...
yes that was confusing.
it's the starting up as firewire drive that doesn't seem to work on my desktop macs. not a problem at all, though. just my personal obeservation.

Same for PC, btw, it makes a 400 Mbps LAN. My setup goes laptop > external HD > pc > camera and allows to play with the camera from the laptop, while playing a sequencer with tracks on the Firewire drive and while transferring files over the LAN between pc and laptop.

Firewire is really superb, for example I can control the cam from the laptop while editing the PC's BIOS
