Hello,
Can anyone out there enlighten me on whether it is a good or bad thing to upgrade to XP Service Pack 2 on my music machine?
Are there any benefits? All I know is that for internet security it is a massive improvement. However, seeing that my music making machine is not connected to internet and never will be, should I upgrade?

I didn't either. And if you're not on the net and your computer works fine, why bother? I think it is more for business networks and such, to protect sensitive stuff!

We had to install it at work so I could say a couple of words.
It's not only for the net but for the off net situations. There is a new feature called Data Execution Prevention that prevents malicious code running on the PC. Another interesting feature I found was that every driver now has a new tab in its properties window that displays minute details about the driver and its capabilities (in device manager).

There is a new feature called Data Execution Prevention that prevents malicious code running on the PC.
isn't this hardware reliant...and only some current amd mobos and 775 chip intel mobos have the security chip.
If not, there is another security thing that IS built into the newer hardware to prevent certain executables running in some memory space or something, cant remember now but it only works with sp2.

Its the same feature: the "NX bit" meaning No eXecute (if I recall correctly). Its only active on the new form-factor AMD cpu's with an NX-aware OS (such as XP sp2). Intel apparently has it in their upcoming 64bit x86 chips as well, but the only cores I know of currently shipping are the latest Xeons (just hit the market) and apparently they have the bit disabled at the moment. I haven't been keeping up as well as I usually do though so its possible the new P4's share the same situation with the Xeons.

I installed it and had a problem getting wireless networking to work after backing up and restoring an image of the C: drive. I heard of someone else who installed it and then his modem didn't work. I took it out.

you might wanna check the list of changes on the microsoft site, ya'll get more informed that way and know if it really affects you.

I would recomend to install it. However, after the installation make sure you read and understand how the new security features work.
