Hello
Here is my problem:right now I am using p3 1,1 ghz box with asus tusl2-c motherboard, and I need upgrade.I want to change my motherboard and my processor, and I need advice from you.I want to run cubase sx 2,with 30-40 audio tracks, and I will use vst instruments, and master effects like izotope ozone,SIR and other expanders, limiters, compressors….so,can you give me idea what machine I need for this?I started with pentium 3 ghy box and asus c800 mainboard, but those are too expensive for me.If there are users that already have something like p4 2.6 or somehing like that, can you tell me can my setup run on this machines? Is there anything else I should know about new motherboards?
I didn’t think about AMD,by the time I bought my p3,they were unstable for music…but maybe something changed?I have luna 2 in my computer,is there any compatability issues with new motherboards?
Thanks
Best regards
Mirko

I'm using a P4 2.80c with Intel D865PERL & 1 Gb RAM (2x500MB), Win XP Home. Seems to be good because it's a fast (800MHz) FSB, and dual-paging DDR 400 RAM (so it can read memory from both chips at the same time). It's absolutely solid as long as I'm in Standard PC mode.
Have a look around Planet Z - there seems to be plenty of other combos that work, but avoid mobos with VIA chipset.
Why the wrong forum, Hubrid ?

Hello guys,
Hubird,this is : Tech Talk
PC Configurations, motherboards, etc, etc
I think I am on right forum

,correct me if I'm wrong.
Plato, thanks for reply, and can you tell me more about via chipsets,or give me some link about it,I don't have a clue why are they bad?
Another thing:I wanted to start with 512 mb ddr,but is that enough to run those machines?
Can you describe me what kind of setup you run on your machine, and if you are cubase user, what perfomance can you achieve with sx 2(I don't have it yet).
Thanks
Mirko

Hoi Darkstar,
yes yer in the right forum
Run a search on VIA chipset here, you'll encounter some problems. Critical is the PCI throughput, which makes it difficult or sometimes impossible to use reverbs.
The amount of memory depends largely on how many samplers you use. I don't use samples except for some drums, so 512Mb is enough for me. If you plan on using larger sample banks, like a 256MB piano, you should get more RAM.
I'm not up-to-date with current motherboards etc, so prefer not to give you hints on that, but I hope this helped a bit

I think it's best to get as much memory as you can, and it's so cheap now that a Gb shouldn't make that much difference to your budget.
I use Cubase SX2, and think the combination of that with Scope is superb.
I've never actually done a performance test with it, but believe me, it's difficult to max the thing out.....I can easily have 40 - 50 audio tracks + 6-8 VST instruments running in Cubase PLUS all the other stuff in Scope....Instruments, EQ, compression + aux FX like reverb & delay.
Mind you I do have 21 DSPs for Scope which makes a massive difference.
BTW SX2 is significantly better than any previous incarnation - well worth the upgrade.

yes, sx2 is great.
for the most "plug and play" combination, intel processor and intel chipset on intel mobo, imho...
cheap and stable: p4 northwood on d865perl. you should get all you need from a 2.4g or faster. 1gb memory(two 512gb sticks) is a good idea if you can afford it.

Hello guys,
is this okay to buy now,I mean will it be old for 2-3 months? What do you think,is it time to buy this machine or is it better to wait something new that will bring new technology?
INTEL Pentium 4 2.8GHz 800MHz Box 1MB Cache
P4 ASUS P4P800-E DELUXE
DIMM 512MB, DDR DRAM, 400MHz, KINGSTON
everything else I already have(dvd recorder,hard disks....)In future,I will buy more memory.
Friend of mine already have similar setup, and he is telling me that he is able to play 80-100 channels on 20 audio groups in cubase sx2,with all master&channel effects. If that is correct, this is right machine for me.
Thanks,
best regards

1 MB cache model is probably a prescott...get a northwood cpu...a little cheaper, cooler and faster.
512Mb ram is bottom line for xp os... consider 1gig or more

And I believe it's been said before in this forum: stay away from the promise RAID controller. Only use the 865/875 chipsets native IDE/SATA busses.
I have a P4C800E Dlx, acpi mode, rockstable. The best thing I recently did was adding two SATA disks in Raid-0 mode (striping), connected to the 875chipset SATA raid-controller. Very high throughput!
Cheers,
Rob
