Just wanted to announce - finally, the upgrade to the Red Dwarf EX, called version 3.0, is now available!
Introductory price is 129 Euros, which includes the RD series II modules. Please see my Web site for more info and pictures.

John, you've done it again! Just received my ver3 update for RD EX and I'm blown away by how good this thing sounds! If there's anyone out there that still hasn't tried one of your semi-modular synths they owe it to themselves to check this out and find out how good SFP can sound!

You can go to my Website and find the upgrade link for current Red Dwarf EX owners on the main page (What's New)...or, just send me an email directly, and I'll send the upgrade link.
The cost depends on if you are upgrading from the regular Red Dwarf, or a Red Dwarf EX. It's $40 if you are a current Red Dwarf EX owner, and $65 if upgrading from a regular Red Dwarf to the EX version.

Hi John,
Can the new versions of the RD modules be loaded into a CW Mod2/Mod3 shell? I have Red Dwarf 1.0, and the modules aren't standard modular modules

The Red Dwarf is a good machine! RD modules are great!
It's easy to plug a wav file into an oscillator slot, or to run an external synth into the ext inputs. I got some fresh sounds out of it right away, using NO BRAINS AT ALL!
This is what we want.

Yes, there are 2 Modular modules now (still in the Templates folder) - one is for oscillators & filters, the other for envelopes and such (things needing Gate inputs).
They are modeled on the Modular II style.

I'm really very happy with this Red Dwarf and the RD modules.
Considering I'm a begginer and I've been only using XTC, after all day tweaking, I found it easy and fast to work with and to get amazing results over and over. Not one single problem.
And another unique and great thing..., the name of the preset is shown in the main surface. How I've been desiring this to happen.
For now it'll be my favourite device indeed.

A couple of questions:
1) any MP3 sound files for this one?
2) the mod matrix looks really easy to understand and powerful
3) why doesn't this one get more commentary? Is the Solaris just overshadowing it? Just looking for something a bit less overwhelming to program than the Solaris...

imho the RD is rather difficult to represent in mp3 as it's an intentionally open synth.
It provides some modular flexibility without the effort of patching - you just fill in the slots with what you consider appropriate.
The RD slot system also allows other developers to supply addional modules without re-inventing the obvious shell over and over again.
In this context I'd rather consider it more complex to program than the Solaris.
The latter is not very complicated once you've understood the management of screen real estate.
No need to apply all and every feature in a single patch, but almost anything is present if it comes to mind.
If I were restricted to one single synth for SFP, it would probably be the Solaris, which eventually got RD slots as well...
Yet both synths have a slightly different approch regarding workflow - choose the one you prefer, the quality is identical.
It may be easily overlooked, but John managed to tune these
instruments in a way they truely deserve this attribute.
Despite all modulation complexity and the sheer amount of parameters they always keep a musical character - and that was probably the most difficult part of it all...
