Hello,

Long time no see.

Maybe not Pulsar related, but can anyone suggest a good lap top for making music on the go.
I am looking at a few possibilities. Either an Acer, Dell, Sony Viao, Toshiba and Alienware. But which is best?
Plus is a 5400RPM drive good enough and which is better, a USB interface or firewire?
USB is supposed to be faster, that much I know. I already own a Tascam US-122 which is quite good but the best I can get out of it is 13ms Latency which is acceptable but I'd like a bit better in terms of latency.
Finally can anyone recommend a good 2 octave keyboard. USB powered.
Would a lap top have enough power to run an audio interface and keyboard?
And is a 5400rpm Hard disc fast enough??

Thanks in advance for your response(s)

Wouldn't recommend a Dell, a friend of mine bought a new one specifically for live audio control and has had nothing but problems, especially with external controllers.

I have an IBM Thnkpad and have likewise found it to be sensitive to unusual usb devices. But its audio performance seems quite good - although I've never really pushed it.

My slighter older Toshiba SatellitePro has been the best - three years (?) old now and going strong.

Just bought a Dell Inspiron 8600 a couple of weeks ago.. very happy with it, running 2 Pulsar2's in a Magma chassis with no problems (only issue so far is that I can't get under 13ms, but I think that's some issue with a tweak I may have done, since I got to 7ms perfectly okay when testing my brother's 8600 before I purchased mine).

Alienware Area51m.

Very robust machines.

I've been able to get down to 4ms on my Dell M60 if I turn off the Wireless Ethernet. Sometimes, depending on what I'm doing, I'll also have to turn off the regular Ethernet channel as well.

If you want to compare tweaking notes, feel free to email me at dehuszar [AT] unitsuit [DOT] org.
