ARGH!! This morning my computer couldn't get past the IDE detect in the boot sequence. My brand new (maybe 3 months old) Maxtor 120 gig disk just makes a noise like something is jammed and then nothing....
@#$#$^%$%&^&&$@#@$%&&!!!!!
What the fuck?! Anyone have any experience with something like this? I guess I should return it to where I bought it but I need my data! I have some things backed up but not everything. GRRRRR!!

I have heard people freezing the disk ? (But I haven't ever done this). Also the drive on my reasonably new IBM laptop died last week - I managed to boot it up again after giving the thing a good thump. Saved some vital data, then that was it - total death.

Both ways has been used with succes by a number of people.
1) freezer - back-up - thrash.
2) bump it - back-up - thrash.
Some companies are supposed to be able to recover data from dead drives. It is not an inexpensive way to go though.
Sorry to hear about it

well, it's in the fucking freezer now...
Luckily I had most of my audio and song data backed up on a second drive, but not my samples and stuff...
I just hope it works for 20 minutes so that I can get that stuff off...

Good luck KoS!
I lost about four song's worth of data ("work-in-progres") when I upgraded my MOBO recently...
Note to self: follow my own advice in future!
My own advice being...if there's any data at all on my HDDs which is important and cannot be restored from elsewhere it should be backed up, else considered good as lost. HDDs can fail at any time (and do).

I'm praying for it to work

How long should I keep it in the freezer?

Wow! It actually worked! Wether it was the freezing or the right good slapping I gave it during boot up, it did start up!
I managed to get most of the files I wanted before it stopped working again so I'm gonna put it back in the freezer and see if it works a seconds time.

Grand!
When it totally packs in, take the insides out and use it to make HDD-shaped ice lollies.
Also - the magnets inside a HDD are excellent fun to play with...

Well, I was actually thinking of sending it back to the shop and receiving a new one since it's still under warranty but thanks for the tip

it gets weirder...the disk seems to be fully functional again after all this.
I still don't trust it though...

In the times of ATARI 800XL I sometimes (warm days, above 30 Celsius degrees) had to put the taperecorder (you know, there were options to have a floppy drive (for pro users) or a tape recorder) to the freezer to get it to work

I wonder what devices will we put in the freezer in 2020
BTW good to hear you saved your beauties, King

What about making the disks a car gadget? CDs are common while HDD disks not
