Win XP - Home or Pro Edition?

I'm thinking of taking the leap from Win 98SE to XP although i am a bit nervous about this one!

What version would you guys recommend...

Professional Edition or Home Edition?

Would the upgrade version be ok?

Will the Pro edition be more of a headache to setup?

Am i right in saying that they are both basically the same but the Pro edition is more tweakable?

I have no experience with XP but am pretty PC able.

You comments are greatly appreciated.

Do you want to run more than one CPU? If not get home otherwise get pro.

Upgrade is ok.
IMHO Home is more of a headache.
Pro is easier to tweak.

hi - My advise, NEVER upgrade OS
In my days, I have had so much trouble with upgrades.
1 year passes, and you want to change to a faster c: - you must first install old OS, then upgrade....
Or, virus...same story

buy a OEM XP (buy a HD to get it)

You can install XP Pro Upgrade as a stand alone. No need to install old OS first.
After using Win98, XP Pro upgrade will be a breeze. Do not fear. It is very easy to use, much more stable, and if you follow the install tips on this forum you'll never look back. Just keep it simple and junk free!!

Ricardo: Heard that about the XP Pro upgrade to and thanks for the reassurance!

I love this place. Wouldn't know what I would do without it!

I've set up systems on both home and pro, and found there to be no significant difference whatsoever, except pro burns a bigger hole in your pocket.
The only real difference I can see is that pro allows dual cpus, and may have a couple more services, but I tend to disable most of these anyway.
The biggest issue I've had with both is whether to install in ACPI mode or Standard PC. Both times I had to resort to the latter......although you get many more IRQ's with ACPI, I found SFP would just not work properly.....all sorts of timing errors etc.
I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences.

Don't know about Chris but I'm working perfectly with ACPI, and have also used Standard. I think it depends on your MoBo, anyone??

What mobo's are you guys in ACPI mode using....mine is an Intel D865PERL: pretty recent/fast etc, but could not get my system settled at all without reinstalling XP in standard PC mode.....weird???

Does anybody know the difference between the OEM and the upgrade versions of XP Pro?

I have heard that the upgrade comes with 3 CDs where the OEM version comes with something like 1 CD and also heard something about the OEM version not providing the option of formatting in FAT32 (as an option only!), things like that....

I have OEM, and there is option for FAT32.
My misliking of upgrade OS (and Office as well) goes back to WIN 3.1 and through ME
- but they might be more userfriendly now!

This PC (my surfer machine) has ME upgrade, and the job of reinstalling (after worm-atack) was #@$& (pronounce as you want)
.....(y, heard about BU)

My XP OEM came with PLUS on 1 CD.
I had to download Service pack1 (not sure)

A friend of mine recently bought an OEM XP pro bundled with a floppy drive. I think that's the cheapest combination. Still half price compared to the "boxed" version tho.

Also, you definitely need service pack 1. Especially if you have a 200gb+ harddisk. (I forgot what the exact limit was)
