I got the grace design 101 and from reading the manual I disovered that there are 2 versions of it. One version goes 10 decibles louder for ribbon microphones. I got the quieter one. Should I exchange it? I plan to be using it with a ribbon microphone but also some synths.

If you need the extra gain - exchange it if you can. I you don't need it - don't wory. There is probably a reason, why they are not hi-gain models all of them? Price?

My stuff is 120 miles away. I can't test it. Maybe most people don't need the extra gain anymore.

Most people do fine with 60dB of gain. 70 is rare - and so are ribon mics.

I called Grace Design. They are very helpful. The model with extra gain is a factory modification and not standard however he looked up the Sennheiser 441 and it's not a ribbon microphone. It is a dynamic so I bought the correct model after all.
