Hi,

I have a old Apollo Pro mobo with a PIII 500Mhz processor and Pulsar 1 and Luna 2. everything runs flawlessly, but I wish to upgrade the CPU without spending a lot of money.

An upgrade adaptor makes it possible to run a PIII Celeron Tualatin at 1.4 ghz. It won't cost much. Does anyone know if the Celeron Tualatin work alright with audio software and SFP - or is it bound to go down the drain.

I think this is a difficult question, becase very few people use Celeron. I would recomend you to send a little letter to creamware, let see what they have to tell you. Just in case.

The processor should be fine!

This Celeron has only 256kB L2 cache, while P3's usually have 512kB L2. L2: read floating point performance, or in human language: multi media accelleration.

Still, I think you'll benefit big time from the CPU frequency boost!

really,i would expect the apollo chipset to give more trouble than the celeron proccessor.

The vintage VIA Apollo Pro mobo works great. I have installed George Breezes PCI latency patch and I believe I have less PCI overflows (in fact none)than many state-of-the art users. I am a hobby user, and since I trust my current setup, I can't be bothered to spend ages puting together a new computer that might result in days and weeks of problem solving.

Still, some more CPU cycles can't hurt!

So the question is really how significant the smaller L2 cache is for audio applications.

afaik that cache runs at full CPU speed opposed to the twice as large but half as slow P3's - almost certainly it will work significantly faster.
I run a Celeron 1G on Intel 815 works flawless for me with Pulsar One

yeah,the 815 and celeron combo was very popular for a while.

I have a Celatin 1@1,3GHz CPU on a 815 board, and it works fine. Where did you get that PCI patch? I startet out with an apollo 133 board, and I had nothing but trouble. I still use it in a spare machine with a pwersampler as my "out of house" recording setup, so I would be very interested in a patch, witch will improve my performance.

It sure made a great difference to my machine. All the dreaded pci overflows are gone, and i can import uncompressed DV-movie via firewire with no frame losses onto my harddrive. Try it, it might breathe new life into your old motherboard.

I was using one of the tualatin celeron for my pulsar rig for a long time, its a 1.2 @ 1.5 the benchmarks and so on make it about eqivelant to a p4 1.8 ghz in CPU power but with slower RAM.

I dont think p3 "coppermine" (600 and up) had 512 cache, but 256 at full speed. anyways the celerons cache is a bit slower even at the same size.

keep in mind that the motherboards that support them mostly have a 512 meg memory limit.

I just bought the Power Leap upgrade adaptor with a 1.4 ghz Celeron Tualatin for my Apollo Pro mainboard. Wow! It is a completely new machine.

My contribution to the tech talk would be to recommend the Power Leap upgrade adaptor to those who both wants a faster system while saving for more CW equipment.
