Phoned Intel Tech Support today re: log in for SATA update. I was told that the IAA was only required for RAID configuration and wouldn't improve any other configuration......

Are you given the same info in the US or elsewhere? It's not a critical point, I'm just finetuning my installation.

Hi Mikka, I have a Sata like you, and the IA gives me no problems at all, I know this is not what your asking for, but at least it is some information.

You get some features out of it - also if you do not have SATA. I use it.

Thanks Nestor, Immanuel, Gary....I figured it was something like that...I'm installing IAA ....I just like to understand why.

Edit: Just a followup. It seems that the latest version of IAA (PV 3.5.2) is RAID specific. The previous version (2.3) speeds data transfer between the hard drive and chipset and is still available....more info and download

aargh..I can't spell shipsets

There are 2 different IAAs. One is for 865 and 875 with raid, the other one is for other chipsets of the 800 series.

Thanks Immanuel for that info...I'm learning a lot at the moment and these bits help. OK.. Gary..my system seems to default to these settings, so I'll check it and move on.

With this last install I've got separate partitions for XP, programs, samples and loops, work in progress, complete songs, and an image of my tweaked XP, as well as a burnt backup of the tweaked OS on CD. The bios and software have all the latest updates. (All as per the recommendations on Z).

The structure is there and now I can move on and learn more about the software. I'm moving at my own pace, and understanding as I go....So.... Thanks to all.

Activating DMA on hard drives was a critical tweak in the days of win98 where it was not activated by default. In win2000 and xp you normally shouldn't have to worry about it.
