I was thinking, it must be technically simple to ban someone yet leave the guest option open.
Dunno if bbedit offers this, it would be a matter of IP allowenses.
During my one week ban it came up to me.
It's a way to get rid of someone but allowing him to follow discussions which are relevant for him, i.e. for a developer.
Comments, future wishes, etc.
I wouldn't mind if Eric and Manu could login as a guest-only.

I banned manu/eric by username, not by ip. So he/they should be able to visit and view.

But when banned, login is prevented so posting is impossible.

Unfortunately, unless we use IP-ban, it's possible to re-register under a different username. Hopefully he/they won't.

thanks for clarification John.
at least the 'new' member(s) can be easily identified by the IP in case they start performing again in the way they did.

not if you get your ip address dynamically assigned by your dialup/dsl provider, which is usually the case for most people using private/home internet access. static ip assignment is more common for business connections, since it usually involves a fee for that :).
banning complete ip blocks is usually not a good idea...
and big providers mostly use several dialup pools, and there seems no scheme behind the address assignment (or at least none that I would be aware of).
what I consider more important would be a challenge/response registration confirmation mechanism that could prevent automatically registrations followed by spam posts (like the cell phone guys the recently popped up here). but this would mean some more work for john, and I'm not sure if he is willing to spend his time on that...

I'm not worried- i think the new members will be easily identified by what they say and how they say it :)
