The main issue w/ most of the software manufacturers is, they fail to see the importance of MIDI as it was and as it will be w/ MIDI 2.0 improvements, total recall of MIDI CC assignments on device basis, MIDI program change commands etc., etc.,- just because they are satisfied w/ the cohortes of so called "bedroom producers" always sitting in front of their screens and think/work different.
You know, when I just only input MIDI w/ the mouse or mediocre keyboard-playing abillities, use arpeggiators and step sequencers always and "make beats",- the for arrangers and real players important complete MIDI implementation becomes 2nd or 3rd row,- because comping and editing in a DAW can be done on audio level.
This is POST RECORD.
The power of MIDI is PRE RECORD.
In fact, when I were an Apple computer fanboy, willing to buy all new every 3-4 years,- I´d only use Apple Logic Pro because it offers the best MIDI features combined w/ best music notation.
The interaction of MIDI list editor, piano roll and notation editor is hard to beat, even from Cubase.
B.t.w., you´re wrong above,- Logic and Cubase MIDI database started already w/ development for Commodore and ATARI machines.
The MIDI editor and all MIDI feature implementations are still better in C-Lab/Emagic Notator SL and Cubase ATARI 3.x than in most modern DAW applications available.
We cannot thank enough for Yamaha/Steinberg and Apple kept these MIDI stuff intact for their latest releases.
Even Presonus Studio One Pro, formerly designed from Cubase mastermind Wolfgang Kundrus who unfortunately left the boat, is way behind Logic and Cubase MIDI.
In Reaper, we now have it all, almost.
The notation graphics are still far from perfect and there´s no direct interaction between notation and MIDI list editor which is sad.
But I hope for progress also in this regard.
Reason is soooo much behind these three applications I´m pretty sure I won´t see what I want before I die, and so I´m now thinking about selling my Reason licence.
If I were Reason Studios,- I´d skip the DAW developement and concentrate on Reason RackPlugin development and excellent FX devices, virtual instruments and tools for that rack plugin.
IMO, the Reason sequencer itself is absolete.
SCOPE,- I love because it works while I know about it´s design flaws and lack of some features I´d like to see.
But, it´s usable in so many different ways, it works for me in a combination of a hardware keyboard rig as well as a native DAW application.
It works for me because it´s usable STANDALONE and connects everything I want via SPDIF, AES, ADAT and MIDI.
So, it will be the very last I´d give up before I die and I patiently hope for more improvements w/ SCOPE 8 still.
