why not to compress the wave with wavezip?
http://www.5star-shareware.com/Music/WA ... vezip.html
"WaveZIP is an audio compression program that's purpose-built to reduce the size of large digital audio WAV files.
Unlike MP3 and other compression techniques, WaveZIP is designed to pack files without changing a single-bit of audio data. If you're using your PC for music recording, you'll immediately notice the huge size of your WAV files. These files are probably bigger than any other files on your PC and they can eat up lots of hard disk space. WaveZIP is a fast and easy solution to this problem, it also allows you to quickly find, select and convert your files.
Features include the ability to: Reduce file sizes with loss-free compression and expansion with typical compression rates of 30-60% depending on content. Easy-to-use Explorer-like navigation to select files, Drag and drop files from Windows Explorer, Multiple PC file types supported WAV files: Stereo or mono, 16 bit or 8 bit, 24-bit with upgrade ACD files from Sonic Foundry, ACID software, Cakewalk BUN files."

If you can't afford to manage it by yourself cos you don't have the knowledge needed, I know there are a couple of guys that could help us: Spirit, Marcus and Neil, they are related to FTP and those things... They could perhaps, if they can and want, give us a hand on this...

Than you very much Bosone! If we need more FTP space than 200MBs, as already offered, well, what can I say, fantastic! Thanks very much for your colaboration. On 2003-10-21 05:24, bosone wrote:i have infinite web space on my site, but i'm not able to create a form to upload/download/manage the files (and i don't want to give away my FTP pass!So it might be better if someone offered some real personal space.)
so, if someone prepare a sort of webpage wiht some script i'll upload it and we will test if it works...
contact at

anyway, i'd prefer a sort of lossless compression on the wav files... (or mp3 328kbs encoding?)

Wow Petal, that's a LOT of space! As far as I know there are already 3 people in all offering web space. I'm very happy to see this is no longer a problem ... Nevertheless, I don't want to reject the kind offering of ANY of you, so I think we sould use just the one who is better placed, and better costumised for what we need.On 2003-10-21 06:54, petal wrote:
I have just recieved permission from my webmaster, to use up to 500 MB of webspace for the period the contest will be running. The connection is a 6Mbit DL and 3Mbit UL for me, so it should be fast enough.
I will be setting up an FTP-account, which we all use the same password to access through an ftp-program, unless someone else have the time and expertice to create some kind of webpage which is more userfriendly, that I can upload.
But I see that several others have allready opened their webhome for this contest - never the less the offer still stands.
Cheers!
Thomas
To all of those who are giving the chance for us to use the space, A BIG THANKS!!!

My ftp space is accessible at:
ftp://woodshedstudio.net/
name....................public
password............ password
Use the "PlanetZ" directory.
I'd be happy to handle any file organizing the project needs.
I see that Petal has a 500MB space, so that may be perferable, but I'll leave the above ftp active.
I'll keep my eye on this thread.

UPDATE
I´m very excited about this, cos the form is getting much musical and complete than what I'v proposed myself, thanks for your good ideas and collaboration guys...
I get very excited cos I think about the amazing result of EVERYBODY using the same files, nevertheless coming up with completely different songs... I will put them all toguether in my MP3 player and will leasten to them all one after the other, that will be mad fun entertaining!
So far, I would say:
24bit 44.1 stereo. (cos the files will nevertheless be very small and we can get a very good sound definition, particularly thinking we are going to experiment a lot with it so the quality could degrade faster with 16 bits instead of 24)
4 bars of 4/4 at 130 BPM.
The lengh of the song:
160 bars of music in finished tune, (as well suggested by Counterparts)
10 files each as follows: (so everybodys needs and likes will be covered)
* one for base sounds
* one for percusion sounds
* one for drum sounds
* one for chords, high pitch (from central C in your keyboard and up)
* one for chords, low pitch (from central C in your keyboard, and down)
* one for Special Effects (totally anything posible or imposible too)
* one for leads
* one for anything you want to say, in Englihs so everybody understands, about the Z, in RAP!
* one for piano broken chords (any piano sound you want)
* one for any real instrument you can or can´t play, just do it, even if you don't know how to, or get somebdy else's instrument and play something. (flutes, guitar, bases, anything is wellcomed)
Upload:
Upload the files using WaveZip so the time is faster for uploading as well as for donwloading, and the web space we use is smaller.
Note:
BIG question still remains... don't know which the consensus will be: XTC or FTP? If there are Mac ussers and they deffinetely want to participate, I think it's nice to give them the opportunity and we can do the XTC thing later.
Which of the several FTP spaces offered is most suitalbe? We need to chouse one. Perhaps, all those who kindly have offered their web space could agree, searching the best performance available? What do you think about it?
Well, this is it for now, there are sure a few more things to think about... Keep leting your ideas flying to the Z...

For me as mac user, XTC is no problem coz I will not participate, besides I guess it's good for the future for XTC on mac indeed.
As I'm not into the game I shouldn't say anything here, but I can't resist:
personally I don't think in those terms like bass, chords, fx, leads, etc.
Well, a bit, but not as structuring consepts.
May be a bass is my lead, or a lead turns into a special fxsound after openening a filter and applying some fx, or a snare drum is a lead sound (there are famous mixes which have that), etc.
Why not saying make xxx 'parts', and that's it?
You just win freedom and loose nothing, specially with so much parts as you expect.
Consepts aren't neutral, can you agree with that?
But said that, I wish you nice and good programming, and lotsa nice songs out of it!
I'll ask smiley to cooperate a bit, if that's ok

Wow, this is a cool idea, and is really taking shape. I'll hopefully be starting on SX next week or so (if all goes well with upgrading/etc), and this may be a good learning tool for me
Thanks to those that offered ftp space. It makes more sense to do that, than using the planetz music forum. If you set up the ftp with a private password, please do not post the password in this thread-- we can send it around to participants by private message or email.
Cheers,

Use the "PlanetZ" directory.
Some ftp clients are dumb, so I will assume that this is so...at a command prompt, 'cd' to your local directory where the (WaveZIP-ed) files are and type:
ftp woodshedstudio.net
[connection should be made...you will then be prompted for the username first (enter as above) then the password (enter as above - type carefully, as there will be no echo)]
cd PlanetZ
put my_wave_file1.zip
put my_wav_file2.zip
...
...
put my_last_wav_file.zip
quit
Wildcards should be allowed, but a different command is required:
mput *.zip
Should upload all of them
To download, use:
dir [to see what files are there]
get a_wav_file.zip [to grab an individual file]
mget *.zip [to grab all files]
...after cd-ing to the PlanetZ directory of course.
Slightly less dumb clients should manage:
ftp ftp://woodshedstudio.net/PlanetZ/
Hope I'm not insulting anybody's intelligence!
Royston

Hey Royston - does your browser let you delete files in the public/planetz dir? Just curious how my server is handling "loggers"
I use an FTP client - WS_FTPLE - but I've checked ftp woodshedstudio.net on IE and Opera and it works fine
WS_FTPLE is free at:

That would be nice if you participate too. And as part of this comunity, I don't see why you shoudn't tell us your ideas
I like both ways in fact, the complete freedom and the one with some restrictions. But due to the fact that we are not entirely inc lining ourselfs to creativity and that's it, but learning as well, and because we are many, it is perhaps a good way to balance in between them both, i.e., half organized and half free.
I think that if we go completely free, we are going to be also a bit lost, cos the parts wount much very well, and the song composing will take too long for everybody. Nevertheless, I like the idea very much, but perhaps for a different contest.
Even if you don't participate actively, please, vote XTC or SFP when the question arrises... Cheers

It's great for us you participating, cos you are like our mentor or something like that...
I, like you, am going to be starting with SX, so I'm going to be quite lost as well..., but as you say, it's a great opportunity to get into it!
Yes, it's a wise idea, we can send the password and name through private message, just in case there is a funny guy out there, wishin for us to download some "other" thing than a Wav file...
There we go!

I too think there should be more freedom for choosing 4/4, 3/4, 5/4 or whatever. If it just stays 130, it will just be interesting. I don't like the big detailed list with 10 specific types of files. 10 is too many IMO, as my brain will overload trying to keep track of all of them. I say 5 is fine. If you want, you can ask for atleast one rythm track, but no more laws please.
I like the idea of having takes to be the same length. Lets say it should be 32/8 (or 16/4) beats at 130.On 2003-10-21 17:05, Immanuel wrote:

So, one could do 7/8+5/8+5/8+9/8+6/8. And it matches 4*4/4 in a sense. Well, I'm not sure if it musically matches but at least mathematically
But everybody is not forced to do each of them? But I also think less is better.I don't like the big detailed list with 10 specific types of files. 10 is too many IMO, as my brain will overload trying to keep track of all of them. I say 5 is fine.
