Yes, I did compare the SATA with IDE drives, but still the differnce is really much. The throughput it IS different by all means. I remember to have read about this too, and it is true, the throuput is improved also because of the 8MB buffer.

Obviously, what you say can make people to decide what to buy, well... this is unevoidalbe I guess, but this is what helped me to decide myself what to buy. So at the end of the day, this is exactly what people want you to do. This is what I needed people to do with me when advicing me, so I decided buying the best posible components at the best price.

You can go up to 2GBs of memory, but, the only way of getting to 2 GBs is buying two sticks of 1GB each of RAM, and this is too expensive. If you use two double sided RAM sticks DDR 400, you will not be able to use the third slot.

** is it possiable to install three pcs of 512DDR on that P4XP-X mobo? which one is better, DDR or RDRAM? asus is not using RDRAM
anymore ... is RDRAM is going off from market?
thanks

As far as I know you can't use three double sided dimms on the p4xp-x neither but I might be wrong on this one. As to the RDRAM question, it will be fading of the market soon since it has been blown out of the water by the dualchannel DDR setups by an armslength. There was some talk about quadpumped RDRAM but since RDRAM is still more expensive today even if it doesn't match the speed of the cheaper and faster DDR (in dualchannel that is) I don't think the quadpumped stuff will ever get off.

Hi Nestor,

Well I have "decided" on this:

A Thermaltake case(black- the colour would suit the rest of my studio set-up) . The power supply is also a Thermaltake 480 watts.
The other components are>Asus P4P 800 GD deluxe (more on that in a second),>Matrox G550 graphic card, >Intel P4 2.8 800mhz CPU,> 1024 MB DDR RAM PC3200/400,> I have decided on a DVD writer ( a Sony DWU-10a +/- RW),> 1 Western Digital 200gb 7200rpm 8mb cache hard drive,>Samsung Syncmaster 17" LCD screen. I think that is about it.

But......I have just read on the Creamware forum plus here that a couple of people are experiencing problems with the ASUS P4P 800 deluxe motherboard, which concerns me. I really want to avoid hassles!!
I know you suggested a standard CD writer rather than a DVD, but I figure that instead of having 7 discs cluttering up the place 1 disc would be tidier. Believe me, I have loads of discs of data ( standard CDs)and they take up a lot of room!!
I would also appreciate Nestor that you read my post " Calling All Mac Users". It is also in the "Tech Talk" section of the Planet Z forums. I would really appreciate your opinion!!

Thank you very much for going through the trouble of reading and answering my post(s)in the detail that you do. You have been extremely helpful!!!!
Please tell me what you think of my choice of components and tell me what I should change if anything.

I wish you well!!!

Hey Weirdo, what´s up!

Well, I had quite a bad trouble lately, unfortunately my old MOBO, from my second computer, just went away cos of BIOS, but for the rest, I´m enjoing very much my new system, it really is fast!

Well, If you are not sure about the chosen MOBO, I would suggest for you to get the one I have, the P4PE, nevertheless, the latest BIOS 1005 will allow you to get to 800MHz FSB, so you´ll benefit from the latest Intel CPUs running at 800-.

It is a stable proven board, and many people in the Audio background are enjoying with this board. As far as I have been testig it, it´s rock solid!

MOBOs are FAR TOO important, TOO much for you to go with something you are not sure... It´s a bit like thinking about a home, well, you can think about everthing in detal, and be happy about your office, your living room, etc., but... if the location of your home it´s not in a good place, you can´t ajoy all the rest. This is what happens with a bad MOBO, do not take anything you can´t trust 100% I have not heard about this MOBO, it´s too new... If you think the P4PE can give you 800HZs FSB, you don´t lose anything. And having SATA, it´s not a bad thing BUT for the future, nor now...

Extremely good choice your Western Digital 200GBs, it´s the fastest IDE of the market and the fastest amont the latest Western Digital Cavira Second Editions drives too.

I understand your need for DVDs, I´m sure you´ll actually enjoy this very usefull tool. I was rather against because there are two main formats for it, and there is a fight going on till both great companies agree to join or at least, they decide to go for one of the standards. You´ll probably find some DVDs that will not work in your drive, but these problems are likely to be solved soon nevertheless, cos DVD is rising faster than expected to the mass market. My main concer was for you not to spend too much money for storage, if you could do it otherwise.

Back to HD... Most people in the Z will recomend, so I do, strongly, for you to get a Hard Drive exlusively for System and programs files, so you keep everything separated. Everything runs faster and more reliable. You can get a short but good drive for it.

I´ll go to the thread your talking about, I´ve never read this one yet. Ok, good luck for you man...

I just freshly moved from no name medium case
No name 250 W PSU
Abit KT7
1 Ghz Ahtlon
384 Mb PC100 DRAM
Maxtor 40 GB ( ATA100 )
TNT2 Graphic card ( old !! )

To Lian Li pC 71
430 W True Power Antec
Abit NF7-S Rev2
2.6 Ghz Athlon
512 MB Corsair PC2700
Raptor drive
Leadtek A180 Graphic card

I kept the yahama CD burner ...

I was on a tolerable budget.
First impression : I should be okay for some years because everything is just *incredibly* fast ( I don't care about benchmarks )

I bought the server case for the room and well build case ( everything fits tightly )
It's a pure dream : galore of bays and again ROOM !!!!!!!!!!!!

The Antec PSU for rock solid and extra power in case

If 512 MB is not enough well later ... I use 200 MB so far for " background tasks "

I bought the Raptor as fast working drive and has partitioned it in many pieces for projects

I'll buy a second SATA for storage and maybe an additionnal ATA one ... ( 2 SATA ports only )

I partition every drive for fast defrag and sorting of files

My Win XP was an Win98 update

No problem during install

Just I had a SATA drivers floppy with the MOBO and I didn't understand why since there are SATA on the CD ...

In a stage of the install of XP, it asks for drivers, well it tooks them as SCSI drivers ...

Otherwise install of SFP 3.1a reboot for drivers then 3.1c the same

Just : if you have Modular III after you purchased Mod 2 make sure you have the Mod2 key in the allkeys file ( I had fun yersterday )

I'll also buy a DVD burner but later ...

One thing bothers me : apparently for partition, IDE drives ( ATA HDD ) take the first place and SATA drives are second ...

Using FDISK of win98, I couldn't make SATA first

Maybe newer version of FDISK exists ...

I say that because I planned to use the OS partition of my old ATA drive as storage place but well FDISK wants a primary DOS partition !!!

I'll try to find a workaround if I buy an ATA

Good luck !!
