No, it's because the USB bridge chip obscures the SSD's native internal controller, whether NVMe or SATA. Sorry that wasn't clear in my above post.
In order for TRIM to work the command set needs to be supported and passed through, and cheap enclosures do not do this. I have 2 lesser NVMe enclosures that are like this, and so I bought a TB4/USB4 that supports it just fine (because it will pass through everything as if it's a PCIe bridge chip, which it largely is).
