to be honest - that box is by far Apple's most s*cking release of all times - it is no wonder at all that they overlooked the space requirements for PCI cards.
I won't diss the box anymore tho - I fear it's revenge...

I found a much better solution than I suggested lately.
It implies using the plugs as they are intended (pins connecting to the card). Just some modifing at the upper (cable) side.
I tried it out alraedy, the problem now is to get me a few of those plugs, in my town only one shop had two of them, the owner told me for years nobody asked him for it.
I guess they still can be ordered.
I'll show detailed picturers soon
You'll see that it's easy to make the plugs extend much less out of the card by removing up to 7 miilimeter (by iron saw), while connecting the flatcable at the downside of the plug (along the card), without soldering or harming the pins... (for now I keep the how in my pocket:-D ).
The mentioned damaging of the connector has nothing to do with it, to reassure you
The issue definitely isn't a showstopper for me anymore
