I'm a little surprised that nobody's mentioned Kontakt - I've a few friends who use this ansd they all swear by it.

I have it but since buying ShortCircuit I never felt the need to use it any more - SC simply sounds way better and has an interface which makes Kontakt look like a clunky mess.

Maybe, but definitely not "better" in the STS's areas of specialty, IMO. STS 5000 is like Roland Variphrase technology, but improved and with heaps of voices, and offers a metric tonne of filters to mimick most anything out there (experiment with the difference between the "normal" and "R" filters - recognise the two classic dance music filter sounds and what they usually get used for?). In terms of timestretchery/pitchshiftery, the Kontakt time machine isn't really in the same league.

You just have to spend some time with the GUI and the manual...STS5000 cops a lot of flak for it's interface, but it's so worth learning -> it's easy to work with once you've learnt it, and goes off once you've mapped timestretching to a MIDI controller.

It's kind of odd that the accepted wisdom has rejected the STS5000 as second-rate; it's actually a bit of a miracle-worker of a sampler, but isn't recognised as such because of that quirky Akai interface (but then, you can't drag samples from windows explorer directly onto your Akai's or Roland VP9000's screen).

I actually have kontakt but hardly ever use it as Reason's nnxt can do of the things I need a sampler to do.
Mabye I should look into the STS though.

Are we mentioning FX as well? I use two native effects those being PSP84 stereo delay as it's awsome at realtime modulation and has a gorgeous spring reverb sound. And steinbergs roomworks (shockhorror!) Which I've tested alongside masterverb pro and and the sonic timeworks ambience and found it to hold it's own very well. In fact masterverb pro couldn't get as close to the ambience sound as roomworks.
