I can try putting card in my sister's PC this weekend see what happens. It does seem like something has just 'broken' as i have had no problems at all (apart from audio glitches) until this midi problem in the past couple of months. I can only describe it as whatever midi goes into cubase is being interrupted or hampered by 'something', still doesn't explain how midi data is recorded before cubase starts recording..?

audio glitches happens from the following:
wins.installations without proper HHD format.I always repartition then format & then the win. installation.
Inproper Drivers installation.mobo chipset,video card,DirectX.
to instal Cubase 1st instal CW card drivers then cubase follow by CW software.Above is the my experienced,i aply to all those around me & it's work for all our systems.

Yep, sorry, soved the audio glitches (didn't make that vey clear) but cheers for tips anyway. It seem that as soon as I had put that to rest then the midi goes bananas, never mind! Going to try a difeerent mobo and also clean the contacts, see if that helps, if not.......I'm stuck!

Just to add, ensure your midi keyboard is turned off when you try these things. I had problems when my keyboard was sending unwanted messages due to faulty pots or whatever........ drove me nuts for a long while.

I've thought about that, but the only problem is in order to test the midi problem I need to input from midi keyboard. Could also be though that the controller keyboard is faulty..Will try to get hold of another to check this.

On playback, my keyboard was still sending extra messages, triggering all sorts of notes. For me, it was the modulation wheel...... triggering the notes....... It wasn't until I tried turning the keyboard off on playback that I realised the problem. Hope this helps or removes a possible cause.

OK

1. Tried a different controller keyboard - no difference

2. Tried Pulsar in another PC - no difference

Have yet to clean contacts as I'm not sure where to get the 'rubbing alcohol' from and which gold contacts I am cleaning. Can anyone help me out?

One thing is that since i built my new PC it has refused to shut down completely, instead rebooting instantly, since I have taken the card out it seems to shut down fine, suggesting that something is amiss with the Pulsar card or perhaps the contacts as suggested?

I have enquired about getting a new whip/connector not heard anyhing back yet but it seems that the problem points the card/contacts at this stage, gary would you agree?

yeah, connectors are always the weak spot. if the computer is not shutting down properly, there is something amiss, however....

have you removed the whip to see if the computer shuts properly? which whip do you have?

as to rubbing alcohol, you're right. don't use that. use 90% or better(isopropyl) so it won't leave any film. you can get it at any pharmacy.

Put card back in, it shut down fine twice and is now back to the restart after shutdown again.

I didn't have whip connected, whip is the one that came with the Pulsar II card. Audio (in out) & Midi (in/out/thru) and Dig (in/out)

If the whip is not connected and it's back to not shutting down again then does this mean my card is faulty? Or maybe just contacts need cleaning? And which contacts should I celan sorry, the ones where the card slots into the PCI slot or the ones on the outer edge?

that is really troublesome.
as far as cleaning, clean the contacts on the card where they go into the pci slots. the top ones are for connecting two or more cards together. you can clean them if you like....use a lint-free swab.

what does the gold contact area look like? is there still gold there? don't touch that area with your fingers!

Contacts seem ok, a little worn but only very slightly. Will clean when I get a chance.

i mean that if the computer doesn't shut down properly and you have all the latest drivers(video etc.) and bios and it's the same problem in another computer and with and without the whip, AND after a proper format and reinstall of everything, THEN things don't look good for the card....

Also make sure that you have chosen the right MIDI input for your MIDI data, and NOT All MIDI Inputs, which is default...

OK, after a bit of e-mailing with CW I seem to be getting closer.

Setting PC to Standard PC has solved the timing issues, I think, fingers crossed.

Still getting the note on/off data recorded during the count in, but that I can work around by leaving a bar or so empty at start.

One thing that arose during CW chat is that Service Pack 2 could have an effect on midi/Cubase/timing.

When I think about it, the above early notes problem may very well have started when I installed SP2.

I would like to try a clean Windows install without SP2, but can anyone tell me if there is an option to do this if my install CD already has SP2 included? I can't remember, and don't want to wipe and start again only to find I can't opt-out on the SP2 installation.

Anyway, all in all I am a lot happier, very happy the card seems to be safe and OK.

Custom Install with Win XP, I've worked it out.

One more thing, seems now I have great midi timing, but midi and audio are noticibly out of sync, this was not the case before.

Anything I can try

Probably a clean install again..

Well, you may be right, SP2 or not it seems to be a lot better now, audio/midi are now more in sync, I had wordclock transmitting on my ADAT convertor which may not have helped.

So all back to normal, for the moment!
