I agree, initially I was very put off by the Emagic purchase by Apple as I had just finished spending a lot of money upgrading my studio to be Logic-central and was 2-3 months from purchasing a Logic Control. Suddenly it seemed as if I would have no more bugfixes or features, the Logic Control would wind up being a poor purchase and I joined in the rest of the Logic PC users' fray railing against apple.

Fastforward 2 years later and 5.51 still works great (and uses FAR less cpu than the new SX/Nuendo for the same plugin & track count), Logic Control is now rolled into "Mackie Control Universal" which I had only hoped to have as some aftermarket mod voiding my warranty, and the G5's may be a bit underpowered next to a PC but the prices are falling (compared to old dual G4's) and Logic is getting stable on OsX.

The only other thing that put me off was purchasing ALL the plugins that I have on PC (I only own exs24 for logic). Now that Logic will have everything active by default in the Pro version that reduces my barrier to be functional on a G5 quite a bit, making it more attractive. Perhaps not blackmail, but this studio will probably not be all-software for many many years and Logic still has its advantages.

Now they just need to release a Sounddiver OsX properly (current version runs under an Os9 'compatibility' mode complicating things).

Actually I don 't understand all the discussion about the mac. It is a platform but if it is the best platform for music I doubt.

Unfortunately 2 years ago I switched to apple (G4 quicksilver) to find that all the promises about being faster, more reliable, better user interface where just promises never meeting the expectations. Besides the choices with mac are limited (cases, motherboard etc...). And the biggest obstacle is, it is hard to find books to understand the OS 9.x or X.x. For windows there are tons of books and other resources, apple is just not that openminded.

Fortunately I switched back to the pc platform and since 2 years doing what I love to do, record music. I bought a cool 19 rackmount case, an intel P875 motherboard, use scsi 160 harddisks, 1gb RAM, dual videocard. I am able to have more than 150 audio tracks in Vdat, several VSTi, effect, eq. I do FOH mixing with this same gear. No problems

So in the end it does not matter what platform we use. It's just a case of to which you are more attracted and which is more suitable and understandable for you.

have fun

Yes I agree with that completely, they're all just tools.

I've used Mac, PC, SGI, Sun, HP, DEC etc etc, and have yet to find a machine that doesn't share flaws with all other computers (buggy software, sometimes less than stellar hardware support, vendors who try to lock you into their 'proprietary' standards etc). The PC does have my price/performance vote, but while mac & pc may be a moot argument (for all but the die-hard zealots) what Logic still offers is not paralleled by any other application YET.

I am sure when it comes time to write a check I will not be singing praises to Steve Jobs though...

Not sure if you can buy it from retailers, but I've seen brand new copies show up on ebay.

Thanks for the tip. I've 'done the rounds' this morning and haven't been able to find anybody selling it :-/

You can buy Logic for Mac and get a key for the 5.5.1 Windows version for free, if you ask emagic politely. However you should wait, until the new packages are actually available.

best
Wolfgang
