Have you reinstalled your system yet Paul, or are you ready to do it?

Analysing your BIOS in the order of posted pictures:

1. Maxtor 4K060H3 should be set as master (check the the jumper settings)

2. What is "CPU External Frequency" and what other options are there?

3. What are the options for "AGP/PCI Frequency"? I think you should set this to 33MHz

4. "Performance Mode" -> Maximum

5. Enable HT (HT is not the culprit!)

6. "Performance Acceleration Mode" -> Maximum or nothing at all

7. "Graphic Adapter Priority": what settings are available?

8. "Graphics Aperture Size": Max it!

9. "ICH Delayed Transaction": Not sure what this does

10. "MPS Revision": choose 1.4 (this is for Windows)

11. Disable Serial and Parallel Ports if you don't use them (it frees 3 IRQs)

12. "PCI Latency Timer": play with it!

13. "Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA": NO!!! unless you have a PCI VGA card (Atomic is right!)

14. "PCI IDE BusMaster": I don't know what's this for! (I take it back, disable this, this is for a PCI IDE controller)

15. "ACPI APIC support": Disable it if you don't have ACPI enabled

16. "AML ACPI table": Disable

17. "Q-Fan Control": Enable it, what the heck!

18. On my system the floppy is set as first boot device, the CD drive second and hard drive last.

Try these!

I'll try your Settings Bingo with one exception. I'll set my Seagate as Master since Windows is installed on it.

I'll let you know how it goes

Edit: What gets me is that there are absolutely NO reference to MIDI anywhere...

Actually there is an "Onboard Game/MIDI controller" but that is already disabled. It's that connector that looks like the parallel port connector but has less pins.

I must alert you also, if you enable HT, you should change the computer type in the Device Manager (Device Manager->Computer->Double click on ACPI Uniprocessor-> Properties->Driver->Update Driver->Choose Advanced mode and select from a list->from the list, select MPS Multiprocessor PC)

Now I'm plain just getting scared...

ok, you guys.
I don't have enough knowhow to change the jumpers to set my Seagate to primary master so tomorrow morning I'm going to my tech's and get that done. Besides, the computer is still unser warantee and is abviously not plugged in correctly.

I'll get to the BIOS stuff when I get back.

My BIOS settings are almost the same as Paul's. I also have 1024MB of RAM. His screen shots 4 & 5 are the same as mine. The problem is that I have a 3.2Gh Prescott P4 CPU and not a 2.8, but it's locked and only runs at 2.8Gh. I have the new BIOS update v.1016 which is supposed to unlock the Prescott processors, but it still shows 'Ratio Status Locked, Ratio actual value 14'. The manual shows a default of 18. The CPU External Frequency is 200. Do I have to adjust this higher to get the CPU to run at 3.2? I don't want to overclock, just get it to run at normal speed. Maybe the BIOS update added some adjustable variables to do this, but without some experienced help I'm not attempting it. There is nothing on the ASUS site to help. I know many on this forum have this board so I'm asking for advice.

Are you sure the BIOS update worked, do you see the new version?

Yes I see the BIOS revision 1016 on the bootup page.

I got an earful from my tech. He told me my setup is ok. The Seagate is supposed to be where it is since it is SATA. The reason why we must use slots 1,2 and 5 for our cards is because in slots 3 and 4 they would conflict with SATA. Anyways that's what he told me and somehow it makes sense.

So that's the development for today. MIDI still freezes my computer....

Paul, is there any chance you can try out a USB Midi input (like Midex 3 or something similar) just to see if it eliminates the freeze up?

I tried Bingo's settings and I still got freezes.

Time to try some MIDI interface(or a clean reformat and reinstall...)

Have you enabled HT and have you changed the computer type in Device Manager?

Try also lowering the priority of the sfp.exe in Task Manager (right-click on the sfp.exe and choose priority).

Well, after that that mucking around in the BIOS, I switched to Standard PC with at0mic's help. And after 2 hours I have no freezes.

Things are looking up.

I just downloaded the new ASUS BIOS version 1017 and it fixed the problem. Now firewire does not show up and take an IRQ and now my 3.2 Prescott is recognized. Now I don't run at 2.8Mz with Ratio fixed at 14, but 3.2Gz and a Ratio fixed at 16. http://www.asuscom.de/support/bios/liveupdate.htm
