I have just done some reading (on net and on planetz)and have not assembled my system yet. It seems that people are generally saying use the Pentium 3.2 and not the 3.2e(prescot vs northwood debates). I have purchased the 3.2e and am feeling a like a have made a bad choice. I have not opened the box yet so I might be able to exchange the 3.2e for a 3.2. I'm getting more nervous about this upgrade at the passing of each hour. please put my mind at rest and tell me the processor I have bought is going to be fine. thanks anyone for replies

We have no problems with the prescott series!
(but no performance advantage)

They run a bit hotter over here. Should be fine otherwise as far as P4's go.

yeah I read about that today.....I might keep my new DAW in the fridge next to the beer.

The Zalman cooler looks good, but will stick with the provided Intel Heatsink for now.

it's a real shame what Intel provides in the 'boxed' package

if silence is a concern check the mechanical connection of the cooler/fan construction.
I've replaced the Intel with a cheapo Arctic which is in fact less noisy due to slower rotation / larger fan, but the whole thing is resonating nicely on top of the metal parts.

cheers, Tom

I will just have to find out how noisy the intel heatsink/fan is and wether it bothers me too much. Just nother thing.I'm not gonna use Thermal paste on the processor, just the pad. Do People here use thermal paste on their P4 processors?

1. It IS noisy...
2. Depens on heatsink/fan manufacturer..

My recommendation:
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/en/
(cheap and soundless)

best,
andre

with the cooler that comes with the "boxed" processor,no paste is needed because there is a thermal substance on the cooler(don't scratch it).

Just thought I'd add that the P4 line is pretty much dead as of next year...

You're correct but the Prescott will be the LAST p4 core.
They have announced that they dropped all subsequent 'netburst' development and are switching over to focus on dual-core designs based on Centrino which is a continuation of the P6 (pentiumpro/PII/PIII) line.
