Hyper Threading: Intel D865PERLmobo, Pulsar II and Creamware

Hi all,

I recently bought a new PC with the following configuration:

Intel P4 2.8C CPU
Intel D865PERL Mobo
2x512MB 400MHz RAM (Kingston)
Aopen H600a tower case
Gigabyte ATI RADEON 9600PRO graphics card
40GB and 80GB Seagate Barracuda hard disks
Pulsar II running SFP v3.1b
WinXP Pro with service pack 1a

After installing the VST plugins, Cubase SX (v1.0.5)started to crash either during playback (at the second pass of a looped area) or when monitoring a record enabled channel. Hyper Threading (HT) was enabled, but I had my doubts since seeing a couple of threads about HT and Pulsar...

I wrote a mail to creamware support concerning this problem....

!!!! People, in a couple of MINUTES I have received an e-mail from Mr Ralf Bach at Creamware Support

!!!!

He advised to disable HT and ACPI and sent the following link (in german) for disabling the latter:

I disabled HT on the mobo. Didn't touch ACPI though...

...and guess what?

No more crashes

If anything bad happens, I'll put it here.

Finally, a big "THANK YOU" goes to Mr. Ralf Bach and Creamware Support for not letting me down on this...

all our systems work very stable with hyperthreading...

What is your config? Is there a significant CPU performance whan using HT? Any tips for me?

about 15% performance enhancement. i´m using p4 p800 / 1GB RAM.

is there a midi-keyboard connected to your computer?
sx supports ht in version 2 only..

Yes, my old Roland (JD800) is connected to Pulsar's midi in. Why?

Maybe I'll upgrade to Cubase SX 2 then...

..same crash issue if your jd is disconected?

if not, try to connect the synth after starting sx and sfp..

I didn't try to disconnect it, but there was no problem with my old PC... Anyway, I'll try it now.

Hi

can somebody please explane HT,
I wanted to buy new mobo and cpu
but now Intel got me very confused
there are normal cpu's Pv wich support HT,and there are cpu's Pv with HT

the price difference is about 30 euro.
I made a decission on what to buy based on all the good info here on PlanetZ, but know I'm seeing all contradicting info again when I do a search
Does anybody know where CWA stands on this point at the moment? what is their advice wich mobo?

I think it was Bassdude who stated somewhere that people that don't know computers should sell their boards, but I find SFP very easy to use, and I love it, but I still dont get PC's irq,bios and all that sh*t, SFP works just like hardware and there are good manuels with them. The english is "understandable" for a non native english speaker like me, but the technical computer language is going far above my head.

maybe Andre you know somebody here in Amsterdam that can build daw's like you do in Germany?

i tested a lot of boards concerning audio-performance and hyperthreading with nuendo2..

go for:
asus p4 p800 (NO DELUXE!!) and hyperthreding..

if you get any problems, feel free to ask here!
there is a problem with hyperthreading and midi active sent keyborads...
if you get problems, you will need to install a small (usb?) midi-interface...

here in germany, the cpus without ht have a 533 fsb...

go for ht (800 MHz front side bus)

I didn't actually say that.

You might be referring to the "I want to be a musician not a techinican" post recently. This is more in reference to when a person buys a complex card like the pulsar, has some difficulty, and then proceeds to trash the product due to lack of knowledge or un-willingness to learn.

To say "..people that don't know computers should sell their boards.." would be insulting and not true and I try really hard not to insult anyone although I may slip up here and there un-intentionally.

Hi....just to bring it all up AGAIN(soz !)....

I recently bought a new computer too: PIV 2.80c, Intel D865PERL mobo, 1 Gig RAM, 2 HDs etc.....a powerful machine.
I have Pulsar 2 + SRB, but also a Yamaha SW1000XG, which I've been using mainly as a MIDI interface (+ sounds) because my Pulsar has never liked my keyboard (Roland XP-80).....notes would stick etc-unusable if I went straight into Pulsar MIDI in.
In order to access all the sounds on the SW1000 I have to use MIDI Ox (I have a daughter-board on it, so need multi-client drivers)..........this set-up worked fine on my old PIII, but when I first got my new PC had all sorts of problems....

I tried WinXP home in ACPI mode first but Cubase SX2 & SFP just would not behave........timing out the window.......if I recorded MIDI Cubase would insert it upto a bar BEFORE where I'd played it !......useless, and disappointing because I wanted extra IRQs & Hyperthreading etc.
Eventually I resorted to reinstalling XP home in Standard PC mode, disabling most services etc, and have a stable system, BUT no HT, limited IRQs and a thoroughly stripped-down machine.....a V8 running on unleaded !

The crux of the question is, do you think all of that could have been down to a simple MIDI problem ?......is my assumption that SFP doesn't like ACPI mode & Hyperthreading wrong ?......
I now have another MIDI interface (USB) which I use in my old computer for Giga Sampler, but have never tried it in my new system.......could this be the answer?
Maybe it'd be worth having a dual OS set-up to try ACPI mode out again?
