Can you believe it, the new HDD that came with my new machine (80gig SATA) already died! Actually, a 200gig disk that I used mainly for samples died but I think that was in the new year's crash. They both have a similar problem. Cylinder errors. The HDD seems to have problem accessing all the cylinders and each time it hits an unreadable location, it sort of gets "stuck". Has anyone had this experience?

Fortunately, all my other data was OK, and I didn't loose anything too important as I had some project files on the 200gb disk that died. Now I'm in the process of tyring to get a new drive from the manufacturer. Just when I thought I finished re-installing windows, everything goes wrong. I must be emitting some sort of electromagnetic wave or something.

Hi Ken

Who was the manufacturer? I usually go for one of Quantum or IBM drives myself...incredibly I've never had one go 'pop' on me! (That's it - I'm cursed now...)

I had one maxtor 200gb die, and the newer one that just died was a Seagate Barracuda 80gig S-ATA. The S-ATA was cheap, so I got a new one so I can get some work done. I'm going to thoughroughly test the one I just bought to make sure I didn't get yet another defective drive.

By the way the guys I bought the PC from are going to replace the HDD. So, if all goes well, I'll end up with 2 barracudas. (hint: "RAID")

Some says baracudas are not good for raid - I don't know, if it is true. I would never use "Raid 0" (wich realy isn't raid) for music - or anything else important.

Why not? RAID 0 is the only level of RAID which increases performance. I don't think I'll be going to RAID because the new drives are so fast and large.

RAID 0 is NOT the only RAID configuration to increasse performance.

I will not use RAID 0, because there is NO security added (as opposed to real RAID). Actually security is reduced. Normally with 2 120GB harddrives I will loose half of my data, if one fails. If I use RAID 0 I will loose all my data, if one drive fails.

From what I read when I bought my RAID card Raid level 0 is for increased performance and the other levels are for redundancy. Which normally is what RAID is used for. Was my manual wrong or did I not understand it.

Hey!

I finally ditched my evil VIA athlon nightmare, and am loving my new Intel 875 p4 setup. I got a WD SATA 10000 RPM raptor drive which screams both in speed and in decibels! I have half the drive booting my non-music OS, and the other partition for recording tracks.

The drive seems to work great so far, but it isn't the quietest piece of hardware in the world. My seagate is much quieter... Hopefully the dynamat i just ordered will cut the noise a bit, as my main goal with this system was super quiet activity. I upgraded to a condensor mic and tube pre-amp, and suddenly realized that my old system sounded like a vacuum! My old audix om 3x-b is much more directional I guess, and I didn't notice the computer too much when recording. Got to love how upgrading one thing can spawn a crazy and expensive chain reaction! At any rate, the raptor isn't any louder than the 60GB maxtor I also just ditched, so it's not too bad...

cheers,
